Went to my winter brown bullhead hole on thursday for a feed. Got a bunch but kept 8 of thr bigger ones. Got a couple on live minnows under a tipup but moat came off a northland buckshot with a 2 inch drop line and a nightcrawler

Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!

Cool! Are those buddies any good to eat? Heard negative reports, but never caught one myself.

Bullheads are excellent table fare! They get a bad rep as if they're trash fish! I target them a few times a season for a fish fry! Lots of work to process them but man they're tender vittles once you get to eat em!

I have only caught one through the ice, That was by hand. It came up through the hole in 2 feet of ice. I had to find my gloves to keep from getting spined. It must have been attracted by the lantern in the shanty as I was fishing crappies at night.

That one was exceptionally good eating coming from the cold water. All of the ones I have eaten have come out of fairly clean water so they were good eating.

Here noone eats them and they are regarded as trash fish but they are delicious! Pain in the butt to clean yes but tasty. Wife says they are her favorit second only to burbot. They are a lot of fun thru the ice on a light rod.

Used to get a lot of those through the ice in Mass when I was a kid.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

They are very good. There is an annual Bullhead Feed in my hometown evey year, they sell out, the line of people is right out the door.
