Title: I'm done. Sugaring time
Post by: krispcritter on Mar 11, 2022, 05:14 AM
I'm done. I'm out. Time to switch gears and start boiling maple sap. Have 70 gallons of sap to boil down and more to collect.

That's amazing. Hopefully everyone jumps at the chance to buy some.

Same here, my 4th boil will be tomorrow.  I did keep a few jig rods out but that is wishful thinking.

Happy Sugaring!

Reminds me of the Coleman stove “mini-boil” in my neighbors garage as a kid…those rafters  will never be the same! Lol

Hope you have a good, syrupy year! Ski

Looks good. My nephew got into Sugaring a few years ago. Made 230 gallons last season. The big producer around here made just over 2000 gallons. My nephew said it is off to slow start this year....h2l

Really interesting guys! I tried that once in the 70's, had some buckets full of sap. After a day or so (I think) of tending the woodstove and boiling it down, I ended up with about a smaller mason jar of syrup...and that was the end of that!  ;D

One of our biggest parks just started a "tapping program" today, to show folks what it's all about.....

I did a quart this year. The kids got a kick out of it. Who doesn’t like an all day camp fire in the snow?

It was my first time trying it and it took a bit of time to get efficient. I’ll do it again.

I had a short 10 day season with 25 taps and made 3 gallons. Will last me until next year
I just have a W.F.Mason 2x3 divided pan hobby evaporator. But it gets the job done.

Reeleyz, that is how my nephew started, a pan on the gas grill, last year made over 200 gallons.
krispcritter, looks great. I think the season is going to be short also. Sap has been running the best the past few days. 22* overnight and into upper 30's during the day. My nephew boiled for 12 hours on Sunday, his RO was down, had to go to VT. for a part on Monday....h2l

It's additive. First time made quart on turkey fryer. Decided that took too long so built a 55 gal barrel stove with a commercial roasting pan doing batch boils for 3 years, then got  2x3 divided pan evaporator. Looking to increase my tap count on a gravity tubing set up and push the limits of my rig. Seems every few years my hobby expands, kind of reminds me of hard water fishing.....bucket, rod, friend with hand auger and look at us now. lol

Farmer up the road had a big shack

Nice.theres a sugar shack about 1/2 mile down from our property.going to stop in for a visit soon.my oladys brother helps boil there.it was always a thought to tap all my soft maples on the old property.just a tiny turkey fryer boil operation .there was about 60 trees to tap.i know it takes  alot of sap to make very little syrup.

I took my grandkids to a friend's snack a couple weeks ago. They were in heaven. The best part was the sampling the batch. There is nothing better than a couple sips of fresh syrup still warm from the evaporator. We love the dark amber. Took 3 gallons home. I won't eat that fake stuff.

I heard a story on the radio a couple of months ago that Canada's syrup production was so low last winter, 2021, that they needed to release a large amount from their strategic reserve, it may have been 50 million gallons released if I heard the story right. The province of Quebec produces 90% of the world's maple syrup.
