6x14 v nose trailer conversation
« on: Nov 10, 2015, 07:01 PM »
Pulled the trigger on a new trailer today to convert into a fish house/ hunting camper. I got a 2010 6x14 with a 2 foot v nose single 3500 pound axel for 3000 in band new condition. My plan is to do 6 holes with 4 fold down bunks but i and sure the plan will change once i start building. I am going to insulate that trailer with foam boards, any tips on how to do the floor? I am going to be using catch covers and sleeves. How many btu heater will a need to stay warm? will this one workhttp://nuwaystove.com/product/model-2000/ at 1200 btus? Sound i put windows in or leave without? Any tips on putting a rv latch on the door in? That all for now more to come as i start working on it!

If it was mine this would be number one.  Fairly simple conversion

spray foam would be the way to go for the floor and if it were mine I would add a window or 2

that nose would be a great place for a forced air furnace.

I looked at putting a latch on the side door, I don't think the door is thick enough.  I ended up using a simple sliding deadbolt with a small handle to pull the door shut.  I use mine for hunting.  Insulated with silverboard under the roof covered by 1/4 inch 4 x 8 sheets of floor underlay and painted white.  I used self drilling 3/4 inch screws to hold the underlay up.  It's pretty toasty in there even at 25F with a small 600 watt heater.

Thanks for all the responses guys! No drop axel this year i am a welder by trade so i have plans to fab up one next year. Before everyone gets on my about not building one from scratch i did think about it but after pricing it out plus not having a big enough shop to build it in i figured i would come out ahead with the conversion. saved me a alot of time i didn't have! All right back to the build. I went by yesterday and picked up some supplies. I pickup up all the foam board, glue, spray foam, paint and wiring. I left 300 dollars poorer.

After that i stripped off the paneling on one side. I plan to reuse the paneling that came with the trailer to save some money and just trim it out a little nicer.Ran into some screws that i had never seen before. It was a 9 sided torx ! ugg didnt have one, turns out that you can jame a square bit in there and the will come out that worked great.

Found out that behind some trim there was a big hole in the floor in the nose. why wouldnt they just put something in there? oh well i will just have to cut out a piece of ply to cover that up.

Got one wall done between work and down pour of rain.

I have tommorw free from work some hopefully the rain will hold off and i can get some work done.

Made some more progress today i only had a couple free hours but i got alot done. I had to move the trailer into my dad pole barn to get out of the rain it worked great
I finished insulating the walls and ceiling today. I used the same 3/4 inch foam board for the ceiling as i did the walls. Now i just need to put up some foam board in the nose and figure out how to do the floor. Before i did the insulation on the ceiling i ran 16 gauge wire for my four overhead 12 volt lights i am going to be installing. Tomorrow i will hopefully have time to make a run back to the store and pick up some 1 by 4s to trim out the walls and sometime to cover the ceiling. than i will paint the inside. I should hopefully have a blank trailer to layout the design by the weekend. It will be on the back burner next week. Wi rifle opener but i will see what i can get done.

That's not a 9 sided torx, it's a common 8 sided robertson.

Looks like it's coming along nice. Good job! I plan on doing the same since my wheelhouse is not heavy duty enough to haul my track machine any distance. Just a word of advice if there's no barrier of some sort between the metal studs and whatever you sheet it off with the frost will transfer through and drip. Especially if you stay overnight. Hope this helps.

not sure if you are interested but I did this same thing a few years ago to a 6x12 v nose trailer. Works awesome. No bunks just fishing. I turned the nose of the trailer into storage for LP tank, ect. Added catch covers and some fish elevators as well as the catch cover brackets to turn the catch covers into a shelf for your flasher.

Also do yourself a favor and cut your wells at a 45. I tore one off in deep snow. Cutting em at a 45 makes them sturdy and not so flimsy when they are hanging way out there. Obviously this only needs to be done towards the front of the wheel well as the tire clears a path for the back of the well.

Also for the door I used this http://www.menards.com/main/tools-hardware/fasteners-fastener-accessories/gate-hardware/gate-latches/swinging-door-latch-zinc/p-1444448888932-c-9694.htm?tid=-2468321754742715086

I laid down the reflective insulation under the carpet. Don't think it is doing much but I run a 12v fan to push the warm air down and it's always comfy in there. If I were to do it over I would put in a false floor with pink board under it. Probably not needed but when u r into it this far why not? And if u r going to sleep in yours than I would.

@teamlund I think i am going to lay down 1 3/4 foam board then do plywood over that because i have extra foam from doing the rest. I am going to lose about 2" of head room but i should be about 6' 2" total inside height tall people will just have to bend down a bit!
Got a bit done today i will bring you guys up to speed.
I got two sheets of plywood on the ceiling i am hateing not having a square ceiling to walls i am going to have to get creative to trim out that gap,
Got sommore trim done on the wall and the light that run off the truck 12 back up
Got the roof vent all sealed up with some spray foam

And finished my euro mount for my buck i got during archery season. i know its not ice fishing but i thought you guys might like it.
I also bit the bullet and am now an ice shanty in the militia! cant wait for the sweatshirt!

years down the road when this trailer rusts away and I do it again. I will have the floor sprayed with truck bed liner (with insualted floor) instead of outdoor carpet. Also, I am glad I never added windows like some say I should install. Out on the Winnebago system guys will stop and fish next to you even if you are in the middle of nowhere. Not being able to see these poor excuses for fisherman keeps my blood pressure low, and there are a lot of those guys on bago.

Also, if your floor isn't treated make sure you put something on it to protect it. The floor in my shack was treated. Also the trailer jack on your trailer maybe alittle cumbersome crossing cracks, getting on and off the lake at the access points if they are steep. The one that came on my trailer was exactly like yours, I took it off and put a traditional fold up jack on it like you would see on a boat trailer.

Got back to work on it a little today. Got my order in from fish house supplies with some goodies. Got my dual propane tank holder mounter on the tongue got the old jack off i am going to be picking up a new folding jack at fleet farm tomorrow. had to make a couple mod to the tank holder just with some extra nuts so that non of the part viberate off as i am driving around with it.

This is how i am planing to do the hole lay out but i might change it up a little to fit with the frame cross members but that work for tomorrow it dark out already.
I might have 3 catch covers for sale if anyone is interested if i only go with five holes. i bought the 8 pack online.
Still need to do some more trim work and insulate the floor .

did you include an auto switchover valve for the tanks, it's not fun running a tank dry in the middle of the night.

Depending on how much you use i dont like the auto switch over because then you forget to fill the tanks. The cold in the middle of the night will help you remember to fill them trust me. Its no fun to run out and have 2 empty tanks.

looking good. It will be an awesome fishing machine and a fraction of the cost of a commercially made fish house. Not sure what you run for an auger but it sure is nice drilling holes in the shack with my ion. Door shut heat on drilling away. No more burning eyes and chronic exhaust smell. I also recommend these since you will be pretty high off the ice http://www.thefishelevator.com/

no I get some on the inside of the door on the trim but not bad. Once in a great while I get some dripping from the aluminum frame of the crank up vent but its rare. So rare that its not really an issue. My floor get wet more from boots and fish than from the crank up vent. Not sure if it matters but my crank up vent is directly above my heater.
