I don't think I'd be able to keep them alive in the summer because the water in my tank would get too warm, same problem that you have with keeping trout in a livewell. In the winter if you have a bucket and an aerator you can keep them alive. Most of the time if they don't get hit by a pike or muskie I can keep them alive and use them on the next trip. They're pretty hearty as long as the water is cold and they have oxygen.

Ya thats the trick is cold water. Most fish tanks have chillers runnin in them in order to keep the trout alive. Same with shiners. Leave them outside during the winter or in the garage and they will live for a while, in the summer with no shade or temps above 70, have a very short window. You must be hooking into huge pike and largemouth then down in jersey.
