Reallly wish people would use the search function before starting new threads, or at least look back 2 or 3 pages.  We had quite a few multiple Honeoye  lake threads going that I just merged.

maybe the thread name could be corrected. If someone does a search they're not going to put honeyeye in the search box. I mentioned this yesterday but I plan to check the ice off of Sandy Bottom at the north end after work today. May be too early but if there's shanties that far out on the south end then the north may be favoring well too. I'll be careful. Spud bar, rope, picks, floating ice suit, and lots of caution and patience.  Will report this evening on the reports and conditions thread.

In my experience, the last few years, the north end of the lake takes longer to freeze for safe ice compared to the southern part  - several gas holes scattered about as well as significant number of Canada geese that tend to keep it from freezing properly for a while.   We really need cold (single digits or below) temps for a couple of days and no wind to lock it up good and make ice.

I would say you are right, its just funny cause the north end is shallower for a long ways than the south end. you have to walk a lot further to get to deeper water

I think that is this is good info to link or bookmark on this Honeoye Lake ice conditions site.  The map below is from an ice-boating site regarding "gas holes" and one on Honeoye during a race.  They have a map for the general location of these gas holes on the north end of Honeoye Lake off of Sandy Bottom.  I have seen a couple out there in this area as have many others.  These aren't from rotting vegetation as stated on the website or from the "delta" of Honeoye Creek (as the creek is an outlet, not an inlet!) but from natural gas leaking though the bedrock/lake bottom and bubbling through the water/ice.  http://lakeice.squarespace.com/gas-holes-more/ (http://lakeice.squarespace.com/gas-holes-more/)

This blue area on the map is the general area to be alert for the presence of gas holes on the North end of Honeoye Lake if you fish off of Sandy Bottom. Remember this area and use caution when fishing in the area when the ice gets "safe" enough to fish on.

Post by: Grady95 on Jan 03, 2013, 07:39 PM
That's a pretty accurate map.
Honeoye is flanked by tall hills.  Lots of land mass.  There is (reportedly) significant concentrations of natural gas under these hills.  It is reasonable to assume that these gas deposits find the path of least resistance and exit the ground there.  It is suspected that one of these vent areas is under the north west corner of the lake.
There has been speculation that this area is kept open by geese.  I would suggest that the geese are not the primary cause of the hole, but rather, just opportunistic inhabitants of the open water.  Personally, I can't stand geese.  I loath to give them credit for conscious thought! ::)
Anyway, the moral of this is: there is always a danger area at the north west corner of the lake.  I don't go over there until well into the season.  There are fish literally everywhere in Honeoye Lake.
Stay Sharp, Be Safe

I have been out there in the summer on a calm day and watched the bubbles come up... the big one is in 15fow about 1/4 mile straight south of the north end beach area lake outlet... there are a couple in closer to shore along the west shore... better to stay straight south of the north launch when venturing out...

There are fish literally everywhere in Honeoye Lake.

I've never caught Crappie at night by lantern anywhere but the north end. Including last night at the south end. I'm partial to the north end for night fishing Crappie and the deepest water and the slopes rising from it for Perch in the day.

There was only one car at the access point off of County Rand 36.  However, there were a lot of ice fishman fishing near the SW shore who walked all the way across from the East lake Road Public Boat launch site.

The ice is not really safe anywhere else on the lake at this time.  I didn't see anyone fishing out from Trident and the North End (Sandy Bottom Park) today.

First time out fishing today (Sunday).  Yesterday I only went to look and ran into Devo among others.  Went back to the same spot today just short of the "death wish" ice.  (There were a few nut jobs out there!!).  Anyway it was another slow day, as was Saturday.  I couldn't jig up anything, but I was impressed with my new Humminbird ICE 55 that I've been waiting nearly a year to use.  At 10:30 AM I got a flag on one of my tip-ups.  I landed a 24" 4 1/2 lb walleye, as big as I've ever caught in Honeoye Lake.  Nobody else had much of anything so I thought I'd put up the picture just to improve morale.  At least I don't get skunked this season. ;D ;D ;D

I don't see how nobody had much of anything. My bros and I and my buddy Nate and his dad caught around 100 fish yesterday and I had a ton that just looked or bumped it on the camera. How deep were you?? There are so many panfish in honeoye you just move till you find an area they seem to be liking. I can see if you are fishing for walleye but for people not, they need to do something different. Nice walleye though man

Ok cool. You have a hut or do you just sit outside? I have a 2 person clam nanook. I'm usually out there with 2-3 of my brothers. After this warm up and we get good ice again let me know when you will be out there and if I go I will know to look for you guys. And yea, I do the same thing. The one thing I really wanna figure out is the crappies. I know people catch a lot in the spring and I have seen them on the camera ad caught some but never see a lot. Maybe you guys could give me some pointers. Look forward to seeing you out there. Do you normally fish over near the west side where people like to kinda line up cause I thought I saw a group of blue clams over there. I was close to there in about 11-13 ft of water near my buddy Nate and his dad who have a shappell cabin style hut

Us Ice Shanty Rookies have to have 5 posts before the world opens to us.  I just moved up from Long Island and the Spud did not contact Ice on Lake Ronkonoma.  I would like to fish Honeoye this week 2/9 or 2/10 since the recent freeze if someone has a spud report for me.  I will send a report out if I go out

Hi noob.  You have two choices on Honeoye Lake.  From the south end boat launch straight accross or to the north perhaps a quarter mile (as far as the first point on the east side).  The ice is 3 in. or better.  There will be people in both areas when you get there. Take their advice on where it's not safe.  The other safe area is off Trident Marine, about 1 mile south of the north end on the east side.  You can park there.  Go straight out or north.  Going south toward Log Cabin Point may not be safe, yet.  Don't be the first person to go there.  Good luck.

I'll be there in the morning, along with jigandgig and spoonfeeder. Looks as if we will have to get the poop on this site instead of reports and cond. just like the NHL, LOCKOUT. whatever. Guys that are whining about what the ice conditions need to have an interest about being on the said ice instead of making noise about what is posted where. I'm sure some will get my drift on what is being said here. Any how I'm chasing eyes in the am see you all on the hard water. Stay on top and stay safe.

Agreed, snow on the ice NEW ice, thin spots here and there, we will just keep an eye on each other until the lock out is lifted. If you don't walk it (ice that is) don't talk it. Stay on top and stay safe. See you all on the ice. Most know where we are.

Fished Honeoye 2/17/13 and it was sunny most of the day.  The ice was 4 inches.  We went out at Trident and fished deep water by the brown roof.  Our crew caught a couple of Perch on minnows.  Had a little Blue Gill action along East lake road, mostly grunts.  The day was mostly a wash. Watch out at the Trident boat ramp as the ice was broken on the way in and we exited on a neighbors property

same story as yesterday (sat). guess the cold night never locked it up.

I have been doing pretty decent with a small jig loaded with 4 or 5 spikes. I did have one nice frenzy on a small rapala tipped with waxies. Did have some luck on the arctic warriors with fatheads Saturday afternoon, but mostly i just jig around with spikes till i find fish. Good luck!

is there walleye in honeoye?  and where is a good area to go near the state launch?

There are lots of walleye in Hnoeoye.  With the weed issues that past coulpe years, the only game in town is to find them in the open structureless basin of the lake.  This is one of the hardest lakes to catch walleye in because they are very well fed.

Like gambell said, its a realtively structureless lake. Look all over the flats over mud, look for subtle 1-2ft depth changes, they're in there ya just gotta keep looking

Honeoye is a crap shoot for me. I have a love/hate relationship with this lake. But, if I was looking for perch, I would take a look at a good contour map and head to the deepest hole and fish "through it" with as many holes I could drill until I find them. Same for the eyes. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you want to quit fishing and take up golf.

Bugs are working but so aren't minnows, we got on some good fish Monday but when you do its fast and furious and then the dinks role in.

That spot has been a ghost town for the past 4 winters.  Tip up fishing only produces the occasional bass.  Jigging in the weeds (now in 6 fow not 16) only produces dink gills.  It is a shame what has happened to Honeoye.  But like I said before about Honeoye, if you do not change with the times, you will not catch fish on this lake.

And like Dizzy Dean said "It ain't braggin if it's the truth!!" Tough to compete with those pictures!! Good that you put the date on them so you don't have hoards of people trying to get the same thing this weekend.  Nice fish as always Brian.

dang that's a nice haul man, must have been fun. so how is the ice at trident, ive read the reports section but nobody really gave a definite answer to how the ice is right next to shore (i heard some people went through not too long ago) None of my buddies have been down in a while either so i haven't been able to get any good reports from close trusted friends

Nice job and a lot of fun you had there Gambell

Back in the 70's and 80' we used to catch slob walleye and rarely a small one
The reverse happened as the lake changed and every once in a while hard work/searching pays off

I was there yesterday[ Thurs, 2/21/13] and the ice a Tridents ramp looked bad, everyone that went out cut throught the back yard of the cottage next door ....  I don't know how long that will last if the owners see 30- 40 groups of guys dragging huts through
there.   I didn't check it , just looked at it and followed the tracks around.      Slow day, ended up with 6 keepers , smallest was 9 1/2  biggest was 11 1/2.

Ice is in great condition, didn't loose any from the saturday warmup, surface refroze and it snowed most of the day today. Dragging huts will be very easy, smooth ice with a little loose snow on top.
