Title: Bucket Rod Holders
Post by: mjbmxz on Jan 10, 2011, 03:53 PM
After snapping off a rod tip yesterday closing my flip over, I realised I needed a bucket rod holder.  I have heard of guys making them with pvc.  I'm curious if anyone here has some pics of the ones they made so I can attempt make my own type of bucket rod holder that will hold 5-6 rods.  Should take care of the line tangles too.  Thanks, my other rod tips appreciate it.

I just saw some on ebay the other day. you should be able to find them to see how to make your own.

most of them i have seen they take and cut out a knock in the bottom of some pvc so the reel seat slided in ten maybe put a cut across the pipe to fit over the edge of the bucked and there ya have it.
suggest using a dremel with a cutoff type wheel on it to cut the pipe or even a jig saw with a short blade.  Also try looking in the eqipment board for some ideas.

You could also buy them if ya want to they are made out of heavy wire can find them usually at gander or places that carry ice fising gear. i picked up a few of the bucket ones for a buck last year at a local bait shop they work pretty good im my flip over foun a way to mount them to the sled and bingo.

I made this, keeps rods organized, and not tangled. Plastic pipe straps. Smitty

Thanks Smitty, just the type of thing I'm looking for!  I'm gonna try your design, seems simple enough will keep the rods pointed up.  Nice lookin set-up.

Nice looking Smitty. Looks like you could drill holes in the bucket and mount brackets inside the bucket to match the ones on the outside of the bucket. I will have to give this a try. Thanks.

I love the idea Smitty!!
I just looked at a buddy's yesterday and all he uses is Schooley's. He had a neat design but wouldn't work for my rods that are similar to yours. Got to love those Ugly Sticks!
Thanks for the idea!

I did the exact same thing as smitty, but I used the metal conduit clamps
instead of the plastic. Should a done it years ago!

I just did one of these in the beginning of the season. I used PVC. I forgot to post pictures so I'll take some and throw them up. I'm liking it a lot. Nice to keep your rod's near you and organized.

Here is my bucket, I got the idea from another user on a different forum. I used PVC and my rods fit nice and snug. I used a rotozip to cut the PVC where the reel seat is. I then attached my PVC to my bucket with rivets. One side holds my rod and the other has half of a Frabill Pail Pack.

I used a 6 gallon bucket for the extra height (less back strain when seated on it), there is plenty of storage room inside the bucket too for a flasher, tip-ups, tackle bag etc. I put an 8 quart minnow bucket in there and then a few things on top of that usually.

I made one too, but I put the holders INSIDE the bucket to protect the reels.  There is still room inside for a few items and the reels are protected from banging around in the sled.  It takes up less room in the sled too.

I like both ideas! Also like the idea of putting them on the inside of the bucket. What size PVC did you use?

One of my rods has a skinny handle so I used 1 inch for that holder. And 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" for the other three, I forget.  ???

Well, I like the inside the bucket thing too. How do you have the pvc attached?

I used zip ties. Rivits would work too. or small screws and nuts.

I saw somewhere, where a guy used clear tubing for flourescent light protection and cut them up to make holders. I thought this might be a good idea to help keep all the lines where they belong. Seems that is always a major issue if you leave your jigs tied on. They seem to like popping off and twisting around all the rods in your bucket!  :'(

tie wraps and gorilla glue , that way when the straps break they stay in place until you put new ones on. JJZFlash   ;)
