6# line that dont coil and hold memory?
« on: Jan 19, 2011, 06:54 PM »
i tried suffix and trilene ice, in 6lb but both coil and will not straighten out. have to use them for a while before they finall uncoil and jig well. not sure what else to use, braid? really anoying when you use smaller jigs even tungsten. and that line holds the memory and will not straighten out.  :-\

Ironeagle, I've heard gently draging those light lines between two pieces of leather will straighten them out.
Change to a small fly reel and the line comes off nice and straight.
Lindy Ice Line has been reviewed by IceShanty members and they say it's the best they've seen. Even on a spinning reel, it hangs without a twist, and not too spendy. Good luck, Tom

Use that "drop down menu" arrow, on the home page, click on LINDY and then search their site for the best info.

I've used a leader straightener ur however u spell it for fly fishing leaders .. run the first 50 ft through it n then put the spool in a cup of water over nite that should yake a lot of the memory out of the line
If you smoke it they will come

memory is the problem with using mono line... I would much rather use mono line than a braided line. So to deal with the memory problem... when I get to a spot (lets say it's 20ft deep), as I drop my line in the hole I stretch the line with my arms just enough to take the memory out for about 25-30 ft. That takes care of the memory problem for the day for that reel. I haven't tried the Lindy lines yet though...

I tried using 6# line with small jigs and it didn't work with any line I used.
I dropped down to 4# and the memory was pretty much gone. I match my
line to the lure size. If the lure doesn't straighten out the line, then your
fishing with a sponge. You won't feel or see the hits. I use good reels with
good drags. I check my line and knot after each fish. This is what works for
me.

6# is too heavy for small jigs.  Small jigs should be fished on 2 lb for the most part.  Slightly larger jigs are better used on 4 lb.

Out of any lines I have used, I have found P-Line CX Premium to be the line with the least memory (best line overall, IMHO).

Switching to lighter lines will increase your catch rate significantly because you keep in better contact with the jig.  I have found that fishing with my small jigs on 4 lb severely reduces the "feel" of the jig (and the bite)...but on 2 lb P-line CX premium, you the feel is much better.

Bionic is from northland.. i have it on a few rods it works really well no memory issues... its easy to spool also just leave it in the box and spool it up it makes it nice and easy

Great thing about ice fishing is, if the fish don't bite at least you know the "BEER" will stay cold!

What ever mono line I am using, before I start fishing, I hook my jig to my clam, walk away from it further than the depth I will be fishing (letting the line out), pop the bail and gently pull my line tight and start to stretch it out (hold the spool from slipping). This does a couple things for me; 1. Removes line memory/coils (not twist). 2. If I have a nick in my line or a bad knot, it will part their and not on a fish. 3. It reminds me of just how much pressure I can apply to the fish. 4. I then test my drag for the day. If the coils are not gone, either the line is too old or you need to chance the brand of line that you are using. I have used the hole side stretching of line trick and it does work, but I find this is better and gets more things done.
When you first start using this trick, you will break your line sometimes, but that is part of the learning curve and best of all you are MUCH less likely to break the line on a fish!
