Ice Fishing line preference
« on: Jan 14, 2016, 08:03 AM »
Just ordered a new Eagle Claw in-line reel. Now I'm debating which type of line I should rig it with. What is everyone's favorite line, especially for in-line reels? I mainly fish for panfish with the occasional bass while pond fishing. Using gill pills, ratso or small tungsten jigs on Mississippi backwaters or farm ponds.

I like Sufix Ice Magic in 3 lb, orange. The orange color helps a lot to detect strikes.

What do you find the advantages of using braid to be? I use it on some of my bass fishing rigs but curios in ice fishing what you find the big difference to be.

Also Boomdigs, the Sufix is hard to see on the ice. What I do is use Rit fabric dye to color it. I use orange or yellow. You can dye it right on the plastic spool, but it works better to wrap it around something. Like a pop can or something. Sometimes the dye doesn't get to the line on the inside of the spool. I let it soak for a couple days, let it dry and put it on the reel.

Thanks for the reply. I figured the use was the no stretch/bite detection but wanted to make sure. Also good idea on the dying tip wouldn't have thought of that.

I really like P-Line's Florice 3lb for about everything (I do have some 4lb spooled up as well on my rods with jigging spoons)
Just seems to stay more supple and flexible than some other brands I've tried. The good thing now for ice fishermen is that there are quite a few really good line choices available for winter fishing.
You can't go wrong with any of the major brands--just comes down to personal preference and do you fish out of shack--in shack, change lures a lot, and what fish you are mainly targeting!

P Line Floroclear mainly 4 lb. I've tried several but keep coming back to this. I can't tell a difference between this and ice fishing line and it's cheaper.

I am new at this but the braided line is giving us no issues in the shack. We use a fluorocarbon line for a leader. I a told the braided line should last a few seasons, we are getting no backlash or crazy line issues like we did last year.

As from the various answers, it is a personal preference.  So try lots of different lines.  Also why I have multiple rigs with various line types.  I will say Fluorocarbon lines are my preference.

Agree with others on suffix and the orange is my choice also.  Fluorocarbon for me kinks and loops off the reel.
