Gill Fishing depth
« on: Nov 27, 2008, 10:31 AM »
I have caought my share of gills in the summer but never tried them through the ice.   Do they tend to hang near the bottom or suspend like crappie?

The vast majority of gills I catch are on or super close to the bottom with the perch. The lakes I fish have very few weeds though.

I have to agree with both of these guys. I always start with my bait a foot off the bottom. If I am not getting any hits there, I will change to 6" off the bottom. I can always lift my rod to see if they are hitting higher, but since I use a very small cork, I have to adjust that lower.

I don't like it here, so I will probably be here for a while.........

not to get repetative here, but they hug close to the bottom, and often are burried in any weeds they can find, hiding from pike. They do seem to move as day to day they are not where I left them

When I target them in deeper water they are often suspended a few feet off the bottom.  In shallower weeds they are usually very close to the bottom.

Normally I find them close to the bottom but have caught them suspended with crappies.

In mid winter I watched the community group sit in one of the best areas on the lake and catch the normal amount of fish. I moved a 50 yards away in 40' of water and was catching them constant about 25' down. If they went of the screen I would check the holes in the area and find that they only moved 15-20' away. Thank gosh I was in a shanty. they would have figured it ou and swarmed in if they knew. I did that the entire winter.
