Who's still ice fishing?
« on: Apr 02, 2013, 08:35 AM »
Did everybody disappear?  This board went dead pretty quick.  I went out Friday and planned it to be my last excursion......but thinking about going this afternoon since we've had a 24 hour cold snap  ;D

Was out today. Bite was decent but the wind was whipping.

There's a big difference between tossing one on the ice for a picture......and taking one home in a bucket.

I'll be out tomorrow and Friday on Roxbury pond in Maine. I had to cut through 30" of ice yesterday to set a bait trap. Hopefully there will be something in it or I'll be jigging artificial bait. None of the bait dealers have anything left.

But if out of season then both are still illegal and shouldn't be done!     :nono:

Ok, just for kicks, lets make a bunch of assumptions: 1:the bass was indeed kept out of the water long enough for a pic. 2: This was done in full knowledge of the legal issue there. 3: the fish was released. NOW, assuming those three things, which may or may not be true, IS IT REALLY THAT BIG OF A DEAL? Im pretty confident in the fact that at least once, we've all bent the rules just to spruce up a picture a bit...That aside, Great catch!

Don't worry, I didn't do anything even close to being illegal.  I guess a few missed the point.

Here's the point:

When people ask where I caught a particular fish......I always say "Champlain".  Sometimes I fish Champlain.....sometime s I don't......but I'm not to keen on announcing to strangers the specifics of where I've been (especially when it's a small BOW)......for several reasons....none of which have anything to do with fish and game violations.

Here's a question:  What motivates somebody to ask where you caught a fish?  My guess is that they are "fishing" for info to find a better spot than where they usually get skunked.

Instead of being a total jerk and saying, "Nunya business".....I just say...."Champlain".   If they ask where on Champlain, I say "I'll tell you exactly where it was.......it was between Benson Landing and Missisquoi Bay"

Personally, I don't care what you do....I was trying to say that the state does watch these forum...hatchery guys, biologists etc...I thought it was kinda silly to post a out of season bass in a meat pile shot...but I guess its just me. I find it interesting though how on the other topic you speak of wanting to catch a walleye....

"I am digging out my little 10 foot Pelican Bass Raider boat and going to hit some open water this weekend.  Would be stoked if I catch 1 Walleye"....clearly you must be headed to Conn. River

Nice detective work ckashner.  Jeez, if I had thought somebody was going to scrutinize the pics and start making assumptions....I would NOT have posted them.   Actually, those pics are from a few different outings.  I posted them just to share as "ice fishing porn".  I like seeing pics of fish and I know others do to.  I thought it was quite obvious that they were a montage of different pics from diff. outings.  I noticed the board had gone dead and thought some pics might stimulate some discussion.  The top two pics of perch are from last week.  The bucket of perch was from an outing a few weeks ago and the bottom 2 pics are from an outing in early March.  Happy now?

I'll remember to never post a picture of one of my deer on a hunting forum..... unless it's during deer season.

Great comment because we all know if a picture is ever posted on a message board that means that the event depicted happened on the very same day that it was posted.

Troutwhisperer, can you supply GPS coordinates to your EXACT fishing location?? ??? Just kidding dude, I live in michigan and probably never will get a chance to hit the hard water there. I liked the pic's though, keep 'em coming! Nothing inspires me more than pic's of fish either on the ice or in the live well! How many times have we caught Bass out of season when fishing for different species?  :pinch: I average at least one or two EVERY fishing trip whether they are in season or not and obviously I release them but I am not targeting them. Thanks for sharing and keep the photo's coming!

There's a difference between being defensive and getting irritated.

Right now, I'm mildly irritated.

I'll tell you what, that bass is in my freezer right now, along with the others in the pic.  I caught it on 3/15 and posted the pic on Facebook that day as well.  I was fishing a body of water where you can legally keep bass.  I've never tried eating bass, rock bass, or pickerel, so I kept one of each for the freezer.  Haven't tried any of them yet, but I'm fixin to fry em up sometime this spring.

I put my ice gear away last Saturday after two weekends of sunny skies and easterly winds here which seemed to shut the fish off and I considered last Saturday as last ice on two of my favorite lakes and they are good producing lakes, and we got spanked! Lot's of little ones and NO keepers!  :pinch: I can have the gear out in 5-minutes and I am waiting to see the condition of one of these lakes and if the ice is not trashed I may give it one last hurrah! Tight lines!

Went fishin Wednesday, 2 day's ago. My friend caught 10 ea. Bass. 8 were legal size, 2 were not. And one 20 in. Northern. But in our area, the season is closed. That sucks, I know. Also 18 in. of ice.
