Anyone fish for perch after sun goes down ?? Is it a waste of time ? Do they bite ?
-
ONLY once at sundown did I have a run of perch and found that night fishing for perch is worthless. (I've ice fished since 1972)

During open water we were catfishing and hammering the perch.... we ended with 15 perch or so and maybe 5 catfish

Perch have extremely poor eyesight in the dark. They don't have the Tapetum lucidum in their eyes that walleye have. I have seen them on camera get belly to bottom and go almost motionless at dusk.

I caught one in my whole time ice fishing after dark. Your better off fishin for craps and the fish that eat those perch... Walleye

I do a fair amount of night fishing on a local lake for panfish, but I can say I have only caught a few perch at night. All right on the bottom and hardly moving the jig. Most likely from their poor eye site.

Fish in a shack with a lantern. The light keeps em there most of the time. - OH

Some friends and I caught a good number of perch at night once. We spent the night fishing out of a permanant shack and caught a dozen or so all throughout the night. None of us had ever experienced it before or since. I really don't know what was so special about that night. I do remember it was a snowstorm with white out conditions. If you are going to try targeting them at night, all I have to say is good luck!

I fish central Fingerlakes and one of them is known for a 30 min. perch bite just after dusk.. I'll leave work @ 4 pm get set-up at the spot by 5 and it's dark by 5;30 then from 5:45ish to about 6:15ish in about 7' of water catch about 35 fish with 20 keeper's (10" +).. But it's the only place I have ever herd of this happening ..

I have heard perch have poor sight in low light conditions. I have never caught one in the pitch black dark. Right at dark or first thing in the morning right when its getting light out I do well.

Depends on the lake but usually it's tough. Do have a couple bodies of water where I target Perch specifically while working the water column after 'gills and Crappie all night and do very well on them. Much shallower than their daytime areas but SOME Jumbos skim the bottom, in numbers, underneath the 'gills/Crappies. Do a deadstick(ish) presentation right on the bottom sometime, might be pleasantly surprised, they still hit very lightly

when I bullhead fish at night i catch perch right before its dark but when its dark I don't catch any.
-
Mostly no but occasionally yes. ;D

targeting perch at night is a hard job. but i have found out when i am smelt fishing set a line on or near bottom and you may pick up a few. most nights i get just a couple. but once a friend and i got 50.
so i think most of the time its by accident and might get a couple. but every now and then there is a feed bag on after dark.

I`ve been on a good perch bite that went into the night before on the King. My buddy and I used the light from the houses on the shore to see. We didn`t want to leave...
