My Dollar Store Transducer Float
« on: Jan 02, 2009, 03:56 PM »
I have been trying to make a cheap float for my transducer and while I was at the Dollar Store today I saw a bin full of these foam footballs for a buck.

I sliced half way thru length wise with my filet knife and slipped it on the cord and secured it with a rubber band.

It floats the transducer and is easy to adjust up and down and didn't absorb water when I tested it....

Has the rain a father?
Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
From whose womb comes the ice?
And the frost from heaven, who gives it birth?
By the breath of God ice is given and the broad waters are frozen.
The waters harden like stone and the surface of the deep is frozen.

looks like it'll work, if its a little too large for the hole you can prob trim it down and shape it with a hack saw blade ...maybe?

I usually don't put the transducer in the same hole that I am fishing in .
I usually drill 3 holes,1 for the transducer and 1 on either side to fish in.

I don't use any float at all,  I see no need what so ever to use one.

That should work.

For anyone wanting to trim foam like pool noodles are made of, an electric fillet knife makes a nice clean cut. Id suspect it would work well on the nerf material as well.

They also have a great deal on skimmers - serving spoons with the holes  $1.00 apiece. After you lose about a dozen of the large ones you will want to stock up on these.

I use a cheap foam cone from a craft store cut a slit and thread wire through then wrap around some black tape nice and light and works great this one is from my old fishfinder To keep the wire from sliding wrap some tape on the wire for the desired depth and it will stay put

He may have an arm that extents out over the hole. Vexilar has this in all their packs, most people just dont use it. The cable goes through an eye on the end of the arm and susends it over the hole. It works like a plumb bob and self levels. No need for a float to level the ducer with this method. I personally dont like the arm because id have to remove it each trip or id bust it off. The Genz pack on the other hand has a metal eye bolt though that would undoubtedly be durable...I got a propack, so i use da float. ;)

I let it hang just below the ice and when I hook a good fish I pull it up quick.
