need tips on leaders

so for years i just tied a hook directly onto my braided line and thought i was doing okay but... I guess I'm not up with the times.  is everyone using mono for leaders now?  what pound test for what type of fish?  how long of a leader?  I used a 8 inch wire leaded tied directly to the 45 lb braided and caught a 9 lb pike on a 9 inch sucker

I have just started to use the leader system and from what I can see is that it gives the bait less weight to carry around and can move a little more free. I have also cought some nice fish with out the leader. But Ill try it and see what happens....jim s

The Boa NO kink is tops!  No crimps...simple clinch knot, stretches, very thin. Do not get the 20, 30 is what i use. Ill never pike fish with anything else.
