Big weiner = Nice pike
« on: Feb 22, 2022, 05:54 PM »
Decided to try using some big hot dogs on a few of my tip ups today, resulting in my first ever pike on that bait.

Yeah, haven't used hot dogs for bait, since I lived in Texas in over 20 years ago. Used to get lots of bullheads and channel cats on them in open water.

After seeing some under ice footage on Youtube, figured I'd give it a try.

Funny enough, the mackerels and frozen suckers (live baitfish prohibited here) on the flags surrounding this line weren't touched.

Heck yeah.  We catch pike and Tiger Muskys out here on them. I tell people about it and they think I'm high or something- ;D

and you can eat them for lunch unlike old sucker meat-

Even dead baitfish illegal here in summer, so I'm gonna try this on a trophy pike lake I fish every year. Used to catch many double digits up there back when we were allowed to use frozen suckers and mackerels, been a lot harder to get the big girls to eat topwaters since the prohibition. I'm thinking to fish on bottom with bite alarms or quick strike rigs under bobbers.

FreshwaterPhil, nice pike there. :)

I also use hot dogs for pike from time to time.
Nice to mix up the bait choices for them and see what want.
Some days, for what ever reason, pike will take a hot dog, before a smelt or dead other bait.

I bet those cheese injected smokies,or, perhaps garlic sausage, would be a hit to. They both would have lots of oily scent.

I once tried just a chunk of pure garlic, just for the heck of it, and it even got a hit from a pike on a set rod.
It was just enough of a bite to remove the garlic, but, not get hooked. Saw the whole thing on camera. :woot:

Looking for that BIG BITE!

These ones were some sort of extra garlic flavour, maybe spiced up too. This pike ignored the mackerels and sucker all around the hot dog line, which was an eye opener.

One of my fishing acquaintances saw the pic, said he had success in open water many years ago using raw chicken skins, after not getting bites any casting lures. May have to try that as well, will be real interesting to see if I can replicate in open water once baitfish are prohibited again here.

Some local brand of kosher hot dog. Was oversized and had some kind of garlic / spice flavouring. Closer to sausage, but had hot dog on label.

Around this part of SK. some anglers use pieces of beef heart and catch both pike and walleye on that.
They usually cut a chunk of heart and place it on a jig head and set rod, or, tip-up.
Beef heart works OK too in the open water season on the same jig head setup.

I've used chicken hearts and livers for catfish in open water in the past, hot dogs too. Never bothered trying them on ice, nor for predatory species.

Gives me something new to try if I run into bad weather on my remote fishing trips, my cabin is on the water, I can watch bobbers or and hear bite alarms from inside.

Way to go!
Same thing happened to me over 30 yrs ago.
No more bait so hooked on a piece of hot dog.
Big pickerel within minutes.

Nice catch. Makes me want to try a hot dog for bait even more.
