First trout outing of the year
« on: Feb 01, 2022, 08:51 PM »
Few decent trout from a small lake that had it's annual stocking / derby a few days ago.

One of the trout that got away, did so at the edge of the hole, just as I was about to grab it. Whit the rod loaded, the jigging rap shot back at the hand I was about to landed it with, embedding the small treble deep in my finger past the barb.

Lucky I had the right tools for easy removal on hand (including my reading glasses  ::) ), had to push it through and snip off the hook with the cutters.

Brookies. Very few lakes here with splake, and they are closed during winter like lakers. One of the lodges I do some occasional guiding from has been trying to get a permit to stock them and open to ice fishing since a few years, but nothing yet.

Thanks. Sting wasn't too bad, especially once I pushed through that barbed end. I'd have tried the string trick, but the hook was tiny, and I only had one hand to work with. Simpler to push through and cut it.

Yes, better sizes than most lodges I fished at. The derby organizers stocked them in the 10 to 15 inch class, where most of the places I've fished rarely yield a 12 incher.

Most of the province is closed to all trout / char species in winter, unless they are stocked outfitters/lodges, or public waters that were approved to have them open by having local organizations fund the stocking.

Speaking to an old timer up there, he mentioned that they put in 1500 brookies once every winter. My guess is that most are likely caught in the first week or two , as stocked brookies just school up in the shallows near where they get stocked, then get pounded by the crowds.

The lake is reserved for public outdoor activities, no cottages allowed, it's all crown land. They also forbid gas motors, so it get relatively low pressure during the open water season. Good 2 hours drive from my home.

Managed a nice smallie on my first outing there last winter.

Followed up in the summer on my float tube, managed some more good ones.

Not nearly as bad as I imagined. Only hurt while barb was in and I was moving around, once I pushed it through it was a minor sting, stopped hurting as soon as I got it out. Holes barely visible after that, especially without my reading glasses  ;D
