Meal worms on the JawJacker. Live smelt on tip up or dead stick. Shiners will work if no smelt.

Night crawlers work well for Rainbows. I fish them just under the ice.

Cured skein eggs from summer salmon work great.
Raw shrimp is another good one on rainbows.
I'll often add scent oils to the shrimp.

crawlers have been a secret bait of mine for couple decades.  can you imagine a fish coming across a favorite food item it hasn't had in couple months!  one time in the late 80 early 90s, I went to a local lake.  i didn't have any shiners but I still had some crawlers in the fridge from fall.  so I was going to bait my flags with them till I caught tiny gills to use.  never needed the gills. lol  I even put a chunk on my hair jig I was using and was stroking them with that too!  a resident came walking out.  he must have been watching me kill the bass.  he had 3 flags out in front of his shoreline.  he got about 50 ft from me and asked the question.  yup,  what you using for bait?  I said crawlers(I was young n stupid).  he stopped and paused.  then he said aw bullspit and turned around and walked away. lol  he thought I was telling him a story.  ;D  all fish love crawlers period!
real fishermen don't ask "where you catch those"

A chunk of beaver tail flesh on a pink jig head. Works well for brookies too
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to ice fish, have his wife mad for ever.

All I've ever really do is soft plastics.  It's either a swimbait or worm.

When using night crawlers is a treble hook good to use

Use a small #8-#12 single hook, thread a piece of worm on like you would a soft plastic on a jig head. Cover the hook with the worm, then cut the worm leaving almost no extra. This little piece of worm is all you need.
