The First Nation (proper term) residents are allowing people in. They are having people sign in and sign out for contact tracing purposes and are taking temperatures.
Get outside.  It does a body and mind good!

Last week they weren't allowing people into the town site so no access there but they would escort trucks to the beach and access there.  Bittern is locked down completely.

@ran7ger,

Are there other areas to access it?  I have never fished it and not really planning to...just curious more than anything. It is a monster of a lake when driving by. Are there only certain areas people generally fish or is the whole lake pretty good?

there is access at the north end by weyakwin and molanosa and a few other goat trails, haven't heard if there is security there or not.  folks generally fish from the school, beach and timber bay.

Are they driving trucks on yet? Planning on heading up to WhiteSwan next week and am unsure if I’ll need a snowmobile or if I’ll be able to just take the truck on, has to be a good foot of ice by now you’d think?

was between 5-10" ice at piprell on sunday.  lakes didn't freeze solid this year with the snow we got.  temps are above zero alll week, i'd bring the sled.

I drove on Saturday from timber bay.  12-13"good black ice.  Easy driving. Few drifts here and there and some slush. But nothing to worry about yet.   Fishing was super slow. Usually way better for me.  But nice to get out and watch the sunset and sunrise on the lake.

Fished Tobin on Saturday, slowest day of fishing ever, fished from 4’ to 32’, marked 6 fish all day, caught 0, 5 pop ups out that day 1 sauger between them all. Might just have been a rarely poor day.

12” makes me nervous with a 3/4 ton, I definitely like to see a solid 16”+, I’ll play it safe and snowmobile on.

Has anyone tried Bittern, I am heading that way this weekend.  Bittern was one of my targeted lakes.

I went Saturday. They will escort you to the beach or through the reserve to access Timber Bay. They will NOT let you go to Bittern. There was 14  inches of ice where I fished.

Had a good chat with a CO yesterday. He said he checked about 50 licenses on Montreal yesterday (Sunday). Vast majority had no fish to report.

What is reason for not allowed on Bittern? Just curious.

I have been looking a bit deeper into my own question.  I see that access to Bittern is directly related to entering the townsite.  If the local people are monitoring entry to their community due to concerns of virus spread, I have total respect for their decision.

if you have a sled you can snowmobile in from the south end of bittern. park trailer at lts on highway 2 and waskesiu  turn off , short ride onto bittern  10 minutes tops

They're limiting access as a covid measure.  The lakes need a break anyway.

Much better place to leave truck and trailer, as to on the reserve

I heard that bittern had pretty bad winter kill last year?  That could be factoring into the decision to restrict access to Bittern?  Maybe its good that it gets a bit of a break this year.  My understanding is that the band is pretty aware of the value of the fish resource and works pretty hard to protect it these days.  Ive been told they post guards up during the spawn along the river to protect the walleye.

I have worked with a few people from montreal lake over the years and they are all very nice and its great to see the community trying to preserve and enhance the fish in the lakes out there.  My understanding is that "back in the day" montreal lake was the goto destination fishing lake until it got overfished.  Seems like it is starting to recover in recent years.

If any lake could handle coming back from some winter kill, i imagine bittern would be a good contender, so hopefully things bounce back if it was enough winter kill to affect fish population.  I haven't fished the lake myself since probably 2018, but it was definitely one of my favorite spots to hit up in the winter.

Does anyone know what the access is like at timber. It was fairly easy access to the beach last weekend. Is anyone driving on at timber?

a few trucks driving on at timber. not much snow on the ice but starting to get deep at the shore.  ice is 11 to 15 inches.  seems thinner the deeper you go. super slow didn't see much, only iced 1
