By the way, that fish is not one of mine. In fact, it's not even from this state. That fish came from Richmond Mill lake, in North Carolina. It was caught by Dr. Bruce Condello, Bluegill enthusiast extraordinaire.

[/ I am wondering why certain gills are so different appearance wise. Must be different cross breeding or water clarity. I myself like the colorful males. What do all you think are the reasons. That is a beautiful gill size wise but kinda ugly. I would still be proud to put it on my den wall.

The water clarity the fish came from certainly has a lot to do with it, as does the time of year. Case in point-this fish is wearing his spawning colors, which tend to be darker in males. Bluegill will often darken up after being caught, and while being handled due to stress. And lastly, this is a Coppernose Bluegill, a strain found in southern waters, and colored differently than our native, northern strain.

Sparkplug, you have it going on. Seems like you are definitely a informed breeder. Do you happen to have a pic of these Georgia giants that get over 3 to 5  pounds. From what I have read these are the biggest of the gills. Was wondering if they have the orange bellies and blue typical colors that the gills have around these parts? Thanks for all the info.

abishop, I will have to dig through my photos to find them. I will touch on one very important point first though. Georgia Giants are Hybrid Bluegill, a cross of at least two different fish, the exact combination is considered proprietary information by the supplier, Ken Holyoke. The common Hybrid Bluegill is the result of a union between a female green sunfish, and a male bluegill. In my research I have found no instances that can be substantiated where Georgia giants achieved sizes that were larger than "ordinary" hybrid bluegill. There is however, much hype and misinformation out there, a lot of it stemming from one photo of a huge fish claimed to be one of Holyoke's giants. "Bubba" as it has come to be called.

Many people purchase hybrid bluegills based on advice from a friend, or a glowing recommendation from a fish supplier, without ever learning the hybrid's shortcomings and advantages. I could type for hours, but in a nutshell, a hybrid bluegill will not grow larger than a regular bluegill, all aspects being equal. A hybrid fish will not exceed the maximum size of it's parent species.... they grow faster for the first couple of years, then their growth slows and the regular bluegills can overtake them in size, if everything is equal. I have raised hybrid bluegills in one of my ponds for years, I'm still waiting to see one over 2lbs. The pic I posted of the bluegill on the scale weighing 3lbs tells the whole story.

Regular Bluegills have the capacity to outgrow hybrids if ultimate size is the goal.

Completely false. Another internet myth. Hybrid Bluegills can and do, reproduce. The benefit of hybrid bluegills in that regard is that the first generation hybrids, referred to as F1's, are predominantly male. Around 90-95% male in fact. The lack of female partners limits their reproduction, as long as no other sunfish species are present.

That's why hybrid bluegills are recommended to be stocked without regular Bluegills, fewer females means little to no offspring, which in turn means they will not overpopulate and stunt.

They did... but when the giant gill got hooked, he fought back and swam so hard the unlucky fisherman was pulled into the bellows of the pit and never heard from again. :'(
