Strange catch on the Conn. River
« on: Jan 25, 2010, 05:39 PM »
We were picking up Tip-ups and we found this guy with our shiner half swallowed.  This was a first for me catching a Mud Puppy.  Is this a common thing on the river?.   Goose

No, the flag didn't trip.  It was pissed when we took it out of the water, around 4 deg.  I bet  it would be great Laker bait. But we put it back.  Goose

I bet I catch 50 - 100 of them a year alot in the spring fishin for walleye on the bottom of the river, and every time I go ice fishing in piermont I get a ton of them on the bottom. ( the state of NH electricuts them in huge numbers just below the fish ladder in Bellows falls seen them a few times doing it out of a boat.)what a nasty looking critter suposibibly pre-historic?

Those are some of the coolest creatures swimming in our waters though you have to admit...
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable,
a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

Place is full of those ugly Mud Puppy.  Not one of them last year set off our flags.  I learned to check my bait more often on the river.

I thought catching Mudpuppies in the winter was a rare occurance, but it may occur more often than I thought. You guys may be able to help with on going research on these animals. It is believed that mudpuppies are native the Lake Champlain, but introduced to the Connecticut River some time ago. I have included a link to a website that is trying to keep track of and document the movement of this species throughout Vermont. Could you guys that have seen these on the Connecticut River or anywhere else for that matter take a look at the map on the website and let me know if you have caught them or seen them in a town that is not shaded in on the map? You can simply post a reply to this site or PM me with a photo if possible and a location. If you are feeling extra ambitious you can go to the "report your sightings" section of the site and fill out a report. If you document a mudpuppy in a town that has yet to have a sighting, it will then be shaded in. If you submit your name with the sighting, you will be considered the "first" person to sight that species in the town and get your name published in the field book. You guys could really help to understand this species better since you see them first hand. If you want to avoid filling out reports on the website, posting on this site is more than fine. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have caught a ton of them in the CT River around WRJ on crawlers and shiners. But only open water. They are very rare in some places, but there are a ton in certain parts of the CT.

Freakin loaded with them from the Bow here to B.F. They love nite crawlers. Good pike bait. Try and keep them off at nite! UGH! Only jigged a few over the years though. Told they eat some fishes eggs? Walleyes? Garden fertilizer, hope they become extinct!  :%$#!:
If the women don't find ya handsome, they should at least find ya handy !  Fish on, gotta go ..........!!!
