Post by: bugchazer on Jan 20, 2022, 08:32 PM
Time to start the annual walleye chase, ice should be safe enough for my old bones by Saturday. Be at Gardners  in evening

I've been saying I'm gonna get down there and join the walleye crew for the last like 6 or 7 years. Maybe this year will be the one lol

is Batterson still a walleye lake? Last I knew it was.

Post by: eiderz on Jan 21, 2022, 09:18 AM
Lots of walleyes in Batterson, and the smart fisherman go there tonight. I was just at Gardner, there is open water all up the west shore from the boy scout camp to the north end, and across the middle from the flagpole to the school. Several spots between the launch and the island with no snow, I would guess they just froze last night. Calamity Bob is waiting another day.

Like eiderz said there are a lot of open areas still. They will probably ice over tonight, so be wary of any super clean ice. I was able to make it out to where I was last weekend, still on 5” of ice where I am.

Post by: bugchazer on Jan 22, 2022, 07:22 AM
I guess I’ll wait a bit longer, way too much open water for these old bones. Large swaths of open water. I leave this to the more adventurous .Good luck and stay safe think I’ll go to Mashapaug tomorrow

I caught gills.  Boring.  Was cold and surprisingly windy still.

I have a suspicion Gardner will be a bit busier this weekend, open water or not.

I suspect your right , I did the same when I was younger. Now the thought of wandering around on ice at nite with swathes of open water scares the crap out of me. And having to spud my way around just tells me the ice isn’t safe enough for me. Hope everyone enjoys themselves and stays safe

Agreed, 110%. I was there last weekend. It was not the Gardner I was used to where you can just spud aimlessly in any direction without issue. I’m not sure what this past week’s weather did to the existing ice so if any you do go, please use your heads.

I was there last night. Lots of opportunity to swim. I've never seen it like that, large patches of open water with 4-5" of ice three feet away. Last weeks wind shoved the ice up on the shore in spots leaving open water 20-50 feet from shore. Some sneaky little potholes about the size of a car in the middle of nowhere just for variety. I'm really surprised not to hear of someone in the lake. Thinking about waiting another day before going again.

Was out on Mash last night and no wind at all, felt like a heatwave compared to my last few trips. Fishing was ok but not great.

Interesting night , caught my first daytime walters last night. Caught 2 15 inches and a greedy 6-7 inch one that hit a 4 inch shiner. He could only get the tail in his mouth and held on while I lifted him out of the hole. They all hit from 4 to 4:30 then it shut off. They must be hungry because they took the shiners deep and fast , no playing around. Still large area off new frozen ice between launch area and islands so I stayed close. Good nite ;D

It was very slow last night. It was a far cry from the fast action Saturday night. All I managed was catfish, pickerels, and some perch. Not a Walter to be seen.

I broke down and went last night. Nothing to get excited about except crossing cracks while traveling. Weird that the lake was singing right until dark, then went quiet. Still was freezing in the holes.

I've noticed that, too. The ponds I fish seem to get noisiest on sunny cold days, and are a lot quieter when it is warmer, overcast, or before sunup/after sundown.

I’m pleased to be off to a strong start with the eyes this year. I’m running Frabill tip up lights for the first time this year and it’s SO much nicer. Love seeing that flashing red light! I’m off next week so I hope to get out a bunch and keep bringing home dinner.

Has anybody fished Mashapaug the past couple of days and have an ice thickness number(s)?

Might make a trip late week when the pressure is falling with the big storm approaching

Has anyone been out after them East of the river the last two days? I’m trying to decide where to fish this afternoon, safety being priority number one.

Thanks,

Mashapaug was MOBBED yesterday. I didn’t fish it just drove down to check out the scene. Dozens of cars parked in Bigelow Pond parking to walk down to the big lake.

The ice on that lake scares the bejeezus out of me but it’s probably safe on the well trafficked areas. Use extreme caution if you venture out to the right side past the channel when I fished it about 2 weeks ago there was 9-10” in the channel and only 4” on the right side.

Thank you very much for that. I figured Mash would be safe but it’s an hour from me and I don’t know any spots there. I’m headed for a ride now and if Mash is the only game in town, I’ll fish it.

Hit Beach 2 days ago and had 5 inches but not great ice. Gardner had better ice a few days ago but I was there Thursday.

I was on Gardner Wed. night and the ice was good. I measured over 6” at my holes. Flags were flying early but it died once it got dark. Not sure how it faired during the warmup.

Beach was good to me again tonight. Got 3 Eyes and 8 Perch. Ice was 5ish but hit a slush spot that my spud went through in one punch.

Nice work guys.  My night exploits have been focused over the border in mass. Crappie bite is good. No slush spots!

I guess your spot is better than mine. I fished into dark for them too last night and it went completely dead after the sun went down

Fished Mt Tom yesterday (2/15) a few other groups with trout by the beach I fished the cove for eye's but nothing, no flags, nothing with jigs, fished until dark. Ice was good, solid again, edges strong with 8 to10 inches in the cove. hope the weather holds.

Thats happened to me a few times on Hatch.  Great bite then dead.  Green light helps a bunch but after some A B testing I learned the crappies were still feeding, just mich shallower than I was fishing.

Most of my trips lately are at night, welcome to join me anytime.

Pretty neat hearing a jacker go off on a calm night. No jackers for me though. Tonight’s walleye fishing will be done with Lakers 👍👍.

I've seen slime darts abused too, but today I was really disgusted- someone out on Roiseland left a 16" LMB and a 14" trout on the ice in one spot, and a 10" perch at another hole. Let them go if you aren't going to keep them!

Yes sir.  They work nice after dark.  Can illuminate them pretty well too.

Unfortunate. These are the people that I report to environmental protection… total scum bags. It’s animal abuse and a complete waste of a life. There isn’t really any excuse for it. I rarely keep fish, almost always practice catch and release, but if I catch a trout that swallows the hook and dies I will gladly grill it up for dinner. No excuse to leave it on the ice.

I wish I knew who did it- they looked a couple days old at least. If they were fresh I would have grabbed them :-/

Wow, you aren't kidding Ryan. We're in weird pattern of really warm for two days followed by several days of nice and cold, then really warm for another two days. Not complaining of course.
