I'm finally building an ice shack for weekend trips, I've planned to build it for a couple years now and decided this is the year. It'll have a 7'x8' fishing/seating area with a 2'x4' extension for a wood stove and built to fit in any full size pickup.
10' pressure treated 2x8 skids with 2x4 frame every 16"

That's it for now but I'll be finishing it on my next days off and will update the thread then. It currently has 6' walls plus the skids and I'm planning a peaked roof to make it 7' walls, 7'9" total height.

NICE ...looks to be heavy ..how hard is it to get on the truck ?

I'd guess it weighs about 250lbs as it is now, hoping to stay under 500lbs when it's finished. To load it this time I just lifted one end then propped it up with a couple 2"x2" scrap pieces. I opened my tailgate and backed up until it was over the tailgate. I took out the 2"x2" props and put it on the tailgate then continued backing up until it was almost halfway, then I just lifted the back and pushed it in.
When it's finished I'll have a hand winch mounted on the back. To load it I'll run the strap underneath and hook it to the front of my truck box. Then as I crank the winch I'm hoping it'll lift itself up and into the box, similar to how those trucks load large dumpster bins.

Thanks to a suggestion on another thread here I found the perfect stove for my shack, now I just need to get one across the border. I decided I'll spend the money and get a proper camp stove, this one will be $522 US without customs charges but it comes with every possible option.

Good looking shanty nice work. If you have not purchased the stove in photo already check Cabelas website think they carry a similar stove with same options. I'm not sure if Cabelas has any Canadian stores if they do and not located far from one see if you save any money by having the stove shipped to a store for you to pick up. I know shipping costs get crazy when you start going from one country to another with large or heavy items.

Actually we just had a Cabela's store open here in Calgary and I'll be checking it out today some time. I did check out their stoves online but at 24" deep they're just a bit too big for my shack. Also to get it completely set up I wouldn't save much over the 2dog stove. This one is 11"x11"x18" deep so just the right size. I bit the bullet and ordered one yesterday, $463 US shipped (plus customs charges) for the stove, water tank, shelf, stove pipe and damper. I'll let everyone know what I think when I receive it but I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with it.

So it's pretty much done, I may decide to make the skids taller at some point but I'll try it out like this first. Thanks for following the thread, I had a blast building and sharing it. Hopefully it's inspired some of you to build one, it's not as hard as you think if you don't rush it. Cheers

I'm not sure really, it was 3 years ago and I bought it in 3 different trips to Home Depot. Here's an approximate list of what it took to build it though.
2 - 2×10 pressure treated 10'
6 - 2×4 pressure treated 8'
1 - 4×8 sheet of 3/4" plywood for floor plus a little piece I had laying around
18 - 2×2 spruce for framing 8'
7 - 2×3 spruce for roof framing 8'
8 - 4×8 sheets of 3/16 OSB
1 - 4×8 sheet of sanded 1/2" plywood for benches

Just wondering how well the winch loading setup you have is working for you?? Are you still using this method for loading? Would you do it this way again?

Trying to load it like that does look like it would be rather cumbersome. I would think plastic/UHMW covered ramps for the skids to slide on while going up into the truck would be a big help. Installing rollers at the bottom of both ends of the shack for the strap to ride on in order to reduce friction would be a plus. Ultimately a cheap 12 volt winch would take a lot of work out of loading, it look like loading would be a handful the way it is pictured. My guess is that if he is still using this shack, there has been some changes made, hope we hear back from him.

The loading process worked fine like that but I never found a great way to unload it. This system works in reverse but was always a little sketchy. I ended up moving to a lake community that winter so I didn't have to transport it in the truck very much. Now I just drag it about 500yds from the storage yard to the shore and it stays on the ice all winter.
