well....I hope they don't suck too bad....I just bought 2 pairs for me and my wife :-\
on a scale of 1-10 what are they ???

I didn't think they were that bad. I used mine for about 2 months before they broke. I give them a 5. As for the stabilicers - they get a 9.

I used them all last year... no problem with them at all. I kinda like them.

I'm a complete klutz and break several fishing rods per year and wipeout in my lawn so I need all the help I can get.

I used a pair last season and did ok with them, but I found that you can slide sideways, but forward or backwards, nope. But, my foot has slipped sidewards and I also kissed the ice. :-* As, I have a few times. :-[
But, I bought another pair on sale and close of last iceseason, and way is one breaks, I've got a spare. ;)
Oh yea, after slipping sideward with them, I started wearing the medal square spikes that go in the arch of your foot too. Now, there is no way to slip. ;D

how the heck do you break that many rods ??? we catch 400+lb tuna and have never broken a rod.......do you break them out of anger slipjohn?

I own quite a few different types of "ice cleats" including the Strikemaster "get a grips". They all worked ok, but tended to slip on the ice now and then.
I then purchased a pair of Artic Spurs (as Camo refers to as the "metal square spikes") These are by far the best ice cleats I have owned. Easy to put on and ALWAYs grab the ice. ;)

I have the stabilizers and my son has the Yaks and the stabilizers win hands down. I think the Yaks are ok but durability wise they don't even compare to the Stabil's. Hope this helps.

The only problem I have with stabilicers is that they occasionaly come unbuckled from my boots, no mater how much I tighten them.
Now you know exactly why I spent the money and bought this
yeah, but SJ, you have to take the rods out of the box sometime :blink: I hope it doesn't happen, but I learned LONG AGO to not invest in expensive rods. I'm gonna stick to the 29.99 st croixs.

YES, That is definetly a problem I did not have with those, they never came off.

This is a funny one!
I have fallen MANY times on the ice due to my atrocious lack of balance and other contributing factors... Finally after losing a phone last year I went and bought some cheap strap-on spikes. Problem solved...

I think the yaktracs are all right. Just don't wear them up near the raod where there is gravel and road salt. THey break down easy when those 2 factors are added. Mine lasted me all last season and never fell on my "arse" once while having them on. While they were off, well that is a different story :o

I've never tried the yaktrax, but I've always had good luck using the korkers that I have on my waders during the summer

Do they fit over pac style boots like a Sorel (I have Lacrosse Iceman)?

I bought a pair last year to try on my Lacrosse Ice Kings. They fit, but did not grip very well on a snow covered lake. Get the Artic Spurs, they will be the last ice cleats you ever buy ;)

I've used the cheap cleats with the rubber straps for years and they were OK, but now have the Arctic Spurs and love them. However, I also like RG's idea about the hex screws and might try that. On slick ice that would be much more mobile.
The Slipbob or SlipJohn discussion on here had me crackin' up ;D :o :roflmao:
By the way, I use the HT Ice Blue rods simply for that reason, they get abused. I like graphite, but really don't notice any difference in my catch rate if I don't use my graphite rod. I guess it's because I'm a line watcher too and the Ice Blues are still sensitive enough to feel bites especially when used with Fluorocarbon. Hmmm, about breaking rods...I'm going to start a thread dedicated to just how we break our rods!

I'm still lookin for a good cleat. I was a little disappointed in my yak trax I'd rate it a #5 out of 10.

I use the el cheepoos made by HT Polar. Nine bucks a pair and I have had em for about 5 years. No problems!

OK this is my 3rd season... I have tried the HT rubber pull overs ... like them best but i get half a season on them .. bought the cleats that go under the center of your boot ... they suck if ya spend anytime on your feet you will pay in foot pain like ya never had before. Lasted one day .Bought a monster cleat spike sandal ... don't remember who makes um ... It was like having a 2 inch lift kit on your boot ..little narrow for my boots ... gave them to the kid .Just picked up a new set of HT OMNI TECH SUPERSTUD sandal cleats .Looks like they Velcro over the boots with sheet metal screws in the bottom making them replacable.Got them at Gander.. will have to get ice to check them out.Watched my bud take a hell of a nose dive trying to get to a flag before me, while using Yax.... think there the best cleat for anybody i fish with ;D... ohh yea it was a nice pick..... and all my bud got was a bloody nose ..

im thinking about just popping some screws throught the bottom of my boots. anyone do this before?

I've had a pair of Ranger Pacs for three years now that I put sheet metal screws in the lugs of the treads and have never looked back. Make sure they are short enough not to penetrate the inside might not be water proof after. Just don't wear them in the house.

HT OMNI TECH SUPERSTUD sandal cleats
If they are like the HT sandals at the wal-mart over here, then they are Exactly like stabilicers. Hex head screws for traction.

Tried the HT's a few years ago, they're ok. Next came the Creepers Thats there name. Don't know who makes them but they work great.
They accordian to fit different width boots,and have 4 spikes in the heel and 8 in a diamond under the front of your foot. They will make short order out of your floor, They have nylon straps with clips for easy on and off.

I have the Arctic Spurs too. The problem is they are so noisy when I am walking that people start looking for a tree for a lynching party. I wouldn't mind if us old farts could run faster. I may be slow, but at least I don't slip.
