The very finest headlamps and hand held flashlights are made by FENIX. Not cheap but they blow the rest away. Check them out before you buy anything else. Just sayin'

Red is a must option, as it doesn't spoil your "night vision".       ;)2

Here are some ratings by Backpacker magazine.

And a few more.

I won't need headlamps anymore since my last outing in the dark was not a positive one but I will say that the headlamps I have and used had different characteristics.  The ones that shine the best took more batteries sooner than the others, the ones that were least bright lasted a long time with the same amount of batteries.  The middle grade were the best ( I wont name the brand) just because they were bright enough to keep me in vision of my gear and save time life on batteries (55 hours) on 3 AAA batteries.

On 3 batteries, I judged by how the light illuminated for the life of batteries, hours on batteries, and how the batteries were insulated from the temps.
I noticed the lights that had a thicker shell lasted longer, heavier tho, ( heavier being 3 oz.) than the light weight lights.  If your just worried about the few hours of use, get the power blinders, if you need longevity, get the power mizer.

Personally, I don't need that much light, so I use the moderate lights, last a long time and is reasonably affordable.
wish you many hook-ups

I have been running an older petzl for the last several years supplemented by a couple walmart special energizer brands. I find that I don't need an extremely bright headlamp the see what's up in my immediate area. I carry a smaller rechargable spot light for checking tipups and such.

I was gifted one of these and will say it is a huge upgrade over the engergizer brand I was using. I save alot of money not having to buy batteries anymore!

I don't like using them for fishing, I think they weird out the fish.. Too much darting around, I prefer to use a stationary light source like a lantern which seems to attract more so...

But I keep one in my pocket for emergencies and times I need a head lamp.. It's a $5 from Target, 3aaa, lasts forever, and it has red too..

They aren't very useful wearing a hood either..

I purposely only turn mine on when I'm hooked up or to recharge my glow. I never leave it on. I also like to put it on over my hood when I have my hood up, keeps it from catching the wind, and adds to the insulation value.

I like the Zipka for hunting, takes up no room.
I use the Princeton Vizz right now. Nothing special, does have red and several settings of white light.
The only thing I don't like is that it has a flashing red light when the battery gets low. Irritating more than anything as it just makes the battery drain more...genius design ???

Sounds like my phone, when the battery gets low it starts beeping, lighting up, and vibrating... Like you said, takes a real genius to come up with that...

Mine has the red light.  I have never used it and always wondered why they add it on almost all the headlamps?  They say it helps you keep your eyes darkness focused so when you turn it off, your eyes are already focused for dark.  Why is this an advantage for fishing?  I guess I need to get into tactical fishing to understand.

I am so glad school is out forever.  But, just on the chance a reason is needed to NOT turn on a white light at night it's all   HERE   ;)2
