YES!!! I got out on the ice today! Drove the quad down to the lake, popped a hole...yikes 2.5 inches of ice :o Checked the ice off shore aways, had 5 inches...enough for me! My friends Tim (Fishinking) and Ryan joined me today, and Camo showed up for the evening bite.
We got out to the spot, and I decided to start the season in style with a round of Sam Adams Winter Lager, possibly the finest ice fishing beer there is ;)
We got into some massive perch right off the bat ;D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01086t.jpg)
After working a few different areas, we finally found a weedy break that held fish. They were pretty spread out and extremely finnicky in the morning and early afternoon...we had to use very small jigs to get bit. Once the evening rolled around, the fish started to concentrate along the break, and we ended up doing very well. I ended up bringing home 28 fish. Camo's four and the 19 bluegills and 5 crappies pictured here (Ryan threw me a few fish too)

very nice spread of gills, WTG and glad you could give my 4 fish a home. ;) ;D The least I can do for a last minute usage of a power auger. :D And the jigpole caught all my fish this evening too, with the 1 nice crappie that Jr. yanked in. ;D Awesome fishy job. ;) Hope that we can hook up Monday. ;) WTG
-
Is that jig you are using, that I see in that perches lips a chart/green Marmooska? That is the same jig I caught all my fish on this past week. Definately a good jig, I didn't like the gap it had from factory so I had to bend my open a bit more.
-
Is that jig you are using, that I see in that perches lips a chart/green Marmooska?
yessir. I find that I catch 75% of all my panfish on that color marmooska. I prefer the bigger sizes, but use smaller when conditions dictate.
-
Man nice going on your first outting bigred, you really hit the panfish hard.
That perch is a cute wee one, agressive though. :D
WW
-
I see that you believe in recycling there, Big Red! Newspaper frying pans! Add a little salt and pepper, then fire up the burners! Adds a bit of smokey flavor as well. Just don't forget to turn on the fan!
Nice mess of fish- I miss gill fishing.

I headed out to my buddies winter camp yesterday. They've got the walleyes and perch patterned pretty good. The day before I got there, they had a day to remember icing many walleyes and getting into good numbers of perch. We had a great time hanging out and catching fish. Didn't get any keeper walleyes, but I did get some big perch
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01092_editedlk.jpg)
big perch 12.5 inches, 1lb 2oz
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01096lk.jpg)
not too bad for the morning
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01094_editedlk.jpg)
As I was leaving, my buddy Scott was watching his tipups from inside the cabin when up pops a flag...the one in 7' of water with a big ol' pike minnow on there...and this is what he caught
13.25 inches 1lb 8oz.

Well, lets just say it was not my weekend :-\ I caught lots of fish, but just a handfull of keepers. Still had an awesome time, but this working M-F and fishing only the weekends is killing me.

Good luck with your new job. At least you'll have some play money.

Did a little bluegill fishing on saturday. Caught and released the majority of the gills caught, kept the biggest for dinner. Also got to shoot the bull with Bartman and his son Marbury, nice to finally meet them.

Got out before work earlier this week with my buddy Carl. We were on the spot with a dozen jigging holes drilled by 530...had been someone else fishing there the day before...garbage and cigarette buts everywhere :-\ As soon as I put my lure down, I had a nice walleye come up for a looksy before swimming away. Did not read another fish 'till the 7:30 when the perch moved in. They didn't come in huge numbers, but it was enough to keep things interesting.
The five fattest
(http://ImG.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01163_edited.jpg)
The keep between 2 of us.

-

-
YEAH MAN. The trick is to figure out how to get me paid days off...now that is where its at ;D
What you gotta do is get someone to shoot you in the leg or something. Then you get workers compensation and time off to go fishing :cookoo: :cookoo: :roflmao: I hate working. Screws my fishing schedule right up :%$#!:
-
Great perch Lance. It is great to leave work and go fishing but sucks to leave fishing to go to work!!!!
-
Got out for 2 hours fishing in the pouring rain this morning. The ice was a solid 8"-10" and the old holes hadn't even started to open. The edges were a little scary though :-\
Got on some fish that my buddy Carl has been tracking for a few days now, and he put us on 'em.
Here's Carl with two big ol' crappies that he caught back to back. They were released after the photo.
My take-home.
Nice big rocky. They sure do fight hard.

-
very nice crappies and boy wasn't it foggy this morning. ;D
actually, it was so foggy, we couldn't find the spot first thing in the morning...took us a little while before we got on it. Stayed foggy and calm for the few hours we were there. No need to hide the background when mother nature does it for me ;D
-
Nice fish man....what depths did you find them at?
-
Crappie fishing in the rain! Gotta love it ::) Nice haul Big red...
-
Nice fish man....what depths did you find them at?
30 - 40 feet deep.
-
Nice fish wish we had ice
-
nice crappie..some of those are slabs too..that was the first rock bass ive seen caught through the ice....nice catches
-
How big was that pig in your buddys left hand.
I would cut off a testicle for some of that action :'(
-
The crappies are pretty nice job... but the rock bass is nasty looking! :P ::) :)
It definitely looked like a fun time!
-Kaybe

-
Nice crappies Bigred, looks like fun, good job
-
why did you release them? those r the best eating size
I like to release the big breeder females if I have enough other fish for a meal...I'd rather those big ones spawn again and spread those big fish genes around ;)
-
Knew it was going to be cold on the lake today...and it was...but the fish were biting. Started out an hour before first light for eyes. My buddies and I could only muster 2 rock bass. At 8 o'clock my 2 buddies decided they had enough of the cold breeze (they had a shanty and heater ???) Brought 'em back to shore, and went for perch solo. Got 'em pretty good too.
Caught enough to keep things interesting, including some real nice ones.
Here's the biggest perch of the day.
Got some bronze carp aka smallmouth, but they really didn't fight at all. They came up like a wet towel.
Later in the day I had moved around the edge of a shallow flat for some more perch. I was pleasantly surprised when I reeled up to a suspended mark, and got nailed by a 20" eye.
The fish fought like hell on 4lb test equipment, but the St. Croix UL had plenty enough back bone to keep the eye under control. Believe it or not, that eye was a Male.
Had some sculpins in his belly
(http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/087071.jpg)
Also got an odd looking 10.5" hump back male perch. Wish they were all shaped this way. Extra meat!
My keepers on the day
(http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/087067.jpg)
well its back to work for four days, then another two days of ice fishing. I can't wait!
-
sculpin ??? looks like madtoms or baby catfish, that one. It has hardspur fins.. :-\
very nice spread of perch. Did you park at brown's, "have to pay?"
very nice, looks like I've got to get out in the main lake. ;D
-
great catch red...that is one differant looking perch thats for sure...zeke
-
I like to release the big breeder females if I have enough other fish for a meal...I'd rather those big ones spawn again and spread those big fish genes around ;)

Nice perch and eyes too! I like the one of that slob being brought out of his domain!!! ;D Looks like a great day on the ice - WTG!!!
-
Its been awhile since the last update. I was out with Fishingking and Bussman last weekend on Saturday, did a little fishing at a lake that was new to us - Loon lake - the fishing sucked too ::) Here's fishingking walking through the nasty standing water before the big winds hit.
The only keeper on the day (released)
Went out Sunday again with Fishingking, but met up with Dwaytkus and his friends for some 'gillage. Lots of pumpkinseeds to go around, but not many of the meatier bluegills, still enough for a delicious meal though
Got out this Sunday with Bartman44 for some more jigging. Lots of perch, but not too many big ones. I ended up losing a nice smallie at the hole at one point, put my spoon right back down and pulled up another, smaller smallmouth.
Bartman had to quit around noonish, so on the way back in we hit a rockbar to see if anything was biting, and the smallies were hot. We both ended up getting some.
Here's Bartman unhooking another hard fighting bronze carp
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01244.jpg)
Met up with Hookset and co. at his awesome hardside. That thing is SWEET!!!
After shootin' the bull with the guys for a bit, I headed over for some evening eyes. The rain was really coming down hard, but I figured If I stuck it out I would be rewarded. I was...with one 7" smalleye ::) Oh well. I waited till the rain stopped to get back off the lake. I'm pretty sure I was the last one out there. ;D
Here's the keepers on the day, 6 real nice perch.
-

-
Well another weekend of fishing. On Saturday, Dwaytkus and I went jigging for some pond trout. It was warm, and quite comfortable, with plenty of ice. Dan caught two nice 'bows. Check out his thread for the pics.
I decided that for my birthday, I would do what I do every year on my birthday - go ice fishing!! Last year I was on Lake George with . Not this year, no George ice!! ugh. Oh well, we did get a bit of rain Saturday, so I was slightly concerned about the ice conditions at the lake we were at, as no one was even in the parking lot at 9am this morning. A quick check showed 4" of clear blue, so off we went. I was fishing with my friend Isaac. We worked our way across the lake's basin, and steadily caught fish all day. We did alot of walking, but with the glare ice, there was no effort involved, even pulling my fully loaded Yukon. We ended up with a nice mixed bag of tasty pannies.
not a bad way to spend a birthday ;D
-
Awesome Fish... And Happy Birthday!!!
-
very nice spread of panfish, and Happy Birthday too. ;D

Happy B'day man, I sent you the same gift this year as I did last year, except it's bigger this year. :-\
-
Thank you so much for the kind words guys. Its was a great birthday. I ordered myself some Allman Brothers live CD's (live@ludlow & stoneybrook 9.19.71) and they are both amazing!! Also got a new cutting head for my Nils power auger, the one with the centering point. Can't wait to try that thing out. I am also getting a new vehicle by the end of the week. Best part is I am really looking forward to a weekend of lake trout and walleye fishing. ;D
-
amen to that red!!!!!..zeke
-
Beautiful pannies, and a belated Happy B-Day!!! Crappie Rob.
-
Another weekend installment of weekend fishing. Got out on Saturday with my friends up to a small Adirondack lake for some lakers. We got a few, but nothing of size, but enough to make it interesting. Biggest fish of the day was a 22" or so laker that my buddy Scott released before I could get a pic of it. Great weather - dead calm and sunny pretty much all day.
My buddy Ryan hooked up
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01269.jpg)
Small laker
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01270.jpg)
then we got into some TINY lakers
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01271.jpg)
they sure were pretty though ;D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01274.jpg)
With the snow predicted and funds running short, I decided to lay back on Sunday, and just do a little open water fishing. It was frigid, with the water freezing up around us, and the guides freezing up so bad they were only good for one cast.
My buddy Jon with a carp. Note the crazy white out about to engulf him :D (who blocks out the background of a mid-winter carp spot LOL!!! ;D ;D)
'nother carp (mine)

here's his fish
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01285.jpg)
With it being so cold, we decided to leave after we call caught one fish.
It was a good weekend, even ended up with a nice new truck ;D
On to next weekend. Man, the options are ENDLESS. I see some panfishing in there, maybe some trout fishing, and definitely some walleye fishing up to my favorite spot ;)
-
Great fish, I love the heart to open water fish, heck I would too for some HUGH carp like that, looks like your going with some big rods. ;) What size line are you hauling them in with?
WOW, WTG :flex:

Nice job on hooking into some little lakers and monster carp. It looks like that was a lot of fun, except for the freezing guides. 8)

Well it was quite a WINDY weekend...combine the heavy winds with completely smooth, rock hard ice, and things get really interesting :o Hit up a smaller rural lake with Dwaytkus on Saturday. It was pretty windy when we got there, with winds blowing a steady 25mph with gusts almost double that. It was tough having the traps because the wind would just grab the shanty, and with the slick ice, it just went. The fishing wasn't too bad, with us being able to sight fish. Dan ended up catching the majority of the fish before we had to quit because the shanties were just unmanageable in wind. I headed over to a nearby lake that was more sheltered from the winds for some evening crappie fishing, but ended up quiting shortly after dark after with only one keeper gill. :(
Lonewolf was supposed to come up for some fishing on Sunday, but with the forecast of the winds to be as strong or stronger the Saturday's, I told him to hold off. I slept in on Sunday, and woke up to find that the winds were not nearly as strong as predicted. Of course not ::). Not wanting to loose a day of fishing, I headed back to the same lake that I fished the evening previous, but decided to try some new spots. I worked over some shallow isolated weed beds that I had found during the summer, but the area was infested with dink gills. Plan B was working over the basin for roaming crappies during the evening. Well I caught suspended fish, but no crappies...again. The panfish I did get though were decent, with enough for a good meal
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01292_edited.jpg)
That was it for my weekend of fishing. I had to work today...even though I was the only one in the office...everyone else had the day off. I figured I would take full advantage of it though. Fishingking stopped by on his way back from his P-burgh trip to drop off some tipups he borrowed, when I mentioned to him a crazy idea I had. There is this reflecting pool kinda thing in the building I work in, and it has a few Koi swimming around in there. Everyday I walk by them and wonder how they would fight >:D I asked fishingking to grab a light jiggin rod. We headed over to the "koi pond"
This is the pond, complete with two heron statues...and 4 Koi
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC00542_Small.jpg)
I wasted no time, and the first one that swam by sucked the jig right in and the fight was on!
Colorful little buggers
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC00536_Small.jpg)
I hooked the biggest one next, and it went right for the statue to wrap me around
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC00537_Small.jpg)
But FK's 30" ice blue with 3lb test beat the beast down and I was able to land 'em
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC00539_Small.jpg)
Office fishing can be fun ;D

Thats great, koi fishing. My last job they had a huge in door pond with at least 30 koi in it. There were 9 of them in there that where all of 10lbs+. i always wanted to try and catch them to see what type of fight they would put up.

I take it you don't work for PETA....lol
-
Lance, I can't stop laughing. That is some funny stuff!!!!!! :D
-
I agree ROFL, the Koi fishing photos is darn funny.:roflmao:
That last koi a pretty good sized one. :woot: How did they fight, what other type of fish was the fight like?
Luckily the security guard did not come along at that time. Just show him your valid fishing license. :callcops:
Nice looking pile of panfish to. :)
WW
-
Thanks for the nice words guys! ;D I wasn't too worried about security, as my boss and I were the only ones in the building - everyone else had the day off. There are cameras, but no one was watching ;)
I am really getting pumped for this weekend...now that Lake George has some ice, I am going to be going after lake trout. I can't wait!

Wow. What a weekend of fishing that was. Fishingking and I started out on Saturday, and really got into the crappies. It actually was kind of slow to start with, but as as soon as the pressure started dropping as the storm moved in, the fish turned ON! It was numbers of slab crappies like I have NEVER caught through the ice before. I ended up releasing 10 crappies between 12" and 13 1/4" and keeping 10 9"-11" eater crappies. The crappies were SUICIDAL, coming 5 feet off the bottom and slamming big jigs on the run. They were so aggressive I didn't even need to tip my jig with anything...not even plastic. Amazing.
First fish of the morning
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01299rs.jpg)
another slab
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/Lance5_edited.jpg)
we were catching smaller legal ones too, so we let all the big females go.
solid fish
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01300rs.jpg)
two FAT slabs about go back
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01302_edited.jpg)
1/4" too big - lucky crappie! :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01298_edited.jpg)
just before the hard snow hit, 2 more about to be freed. It was snowing so hard at one point that the visibility was less than a few hundred yards :o
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/Lance2_edited.jpg)
hard to let those big FAT fillets swim away ;D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/Lance3_edited.jpg)
It was tough to top a morning like that, so we decided to move around and do some more exploring on the lake. We checked out some different weedbeds and rockpiles, and on one Fishingking spotted some perch moving through, so we set up camp, and jigged for about an hour. Well...I jigged...fishingking just relaxed and shot the bull - apparently he's already caught enough fat perch this year. :D I jigged away and pulled up some sweet fish.
I caught 2 smallies, here's the larger of the two.
Also got into the perch a bit, including one big fat 13" tanker. After that, we checked out another area for some walleyes, and after a bit of investigating settled on a nice irregular weededge with scattered rocks. Just a few minutes into the evening, I wasn't paying close attention to the fish finder, I look over, and there is this big red mark under my jig. Hmmm. Lift up on the rod and FISH ON!! It was one hell of a fight on 4lb test, but the dang St. Croix UL handled the fish well, and after a good struggle, I grabbed the 23" MALE walleye. My biggest eye through the ice yet.
The ride back on the quad was interesting. It was completely dark, but the winds had started to come up really heavily, and the I actually couldn't see where I was going from the snow blowing around. Good thing I had the 4 mile trip back to truck plotted out on the GPS :D
The meathunter shot ;D What a day, uh?

Thanks WF, we did have a BLAST! The reel is actually a Silstar tgf-20. Its a cheap $15 dollar reel, but it has instant anti-reverse and a very smooth drag, I've been running two on my UL set ups this year, and they have yet to fail me.

It was going to be really hard to top Saturdays action, but with all the fillets that Fishingking and I ended up with, we knew we weren't going to keep anything more Sunday. Lonewolf came up to join us - the plan was to go to Lake George, but with the hard winds predicted, I wasn't too interested in going out on very thin ice way out in the lake, so instead we opted for a more protected body of water, and it really paid off. I caught more big gills and crappies than I can ever remember catching in one day before. It was just astounding. The crappies were up to 13" and the gills were up to 9.5 inches, but had big ol' shoulders.
We started in an deep area with lots of shallow cover nearby, and the fish were STACKED. Every single hole had numerous fish suspended on the vex. I ended up working over 2 holes for the morning, and the entire time there was multiple fish on the flasher that were just gobbling my jigs up like candy. It was great relaxing the the shanty without a jacket on, with snow piled around the edges, the heater going, and catching fish hand over fist.
Gotta love catching catching a big ol' "bull" gill as soon as the jig gets a few feet under the ice.
The gills were plentiful, and I took some pictures of a few of the bigger ones.

The fish were so aggressive that at points in the day, they would starting moving up on the jig once it got just a few feet under the ice. If you tried to drop it past them, they would either suck it in on the fall, or actually chase it DOWN...something I never EVER see suspended fish do. But they did.

It wasn't just gills though, About 1/3 of my catch was crappies...nice ones too. Slabs.

Lonewolf finally pried me out of my heated shanty to shanty to check out his lx-5 and Tica reels (great units BTW), and got a pic of him with a nice crappie
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/Hudson_River_wbigredonice_001_edite.jpg)
I ended the day in style, right after catching my biggest gill on the day.
It was a weekend I don't think any of us will soon forget.
-
Eehh... I checked in too early eh! Missed the Sunday's results!! LOL More good fortune passed your groups way, or, was it skill?? :D Those last few pics of gills and crappies really have some nice color!!! Well another great trip in the books, folks. I headed out to "Trout Camp" with my buddies for some ice fishing. I had a great time hanging out with my friends, and doing some serious jigging. The action was fantastic. My friends have the fish patterned down to a science, so all I had to do was drill in the right spot ;). I ended up nabbing 42 lakers over the course of a few days time, with a few of my buddies scoring way more than I. The only problem was the ice. It was really REALLY scary. At times I would be on 3 inches of good ice, then 3 feet away I'm on alot less - dangerous conditions. I made sure I had my spikes around my neck and a strong rope within easy reach. Thankfully there were no accidents. :-\ . The wind was howling the entire time I was there, and I burned through a bunch of propane cylinders. It was nice to have the big space of the Yukon to fight those lakers in. Well enough chat, lets get to the pictures, and there is alot of them this week.
my first laker of the trip, its just a baby ;D

this one has a funky deformity, possibly an old hook wound of some sort?

Okay now here are some bigger fish.

Everything was released with the exception of one of the tasty whitefish, and one very unfortunate laker that got hooked in a gill arch. :pinch:
Fishingking was also with us, and has some pictures of his own to put up at some point. You can see his boot tips in some of my pictures if you look closely ;) ;D
Almost forgot - I took a picture of this neat ice formation

Well it looks like this was my last weekend on the ice this year. On Saturday morning my buddies and I headed out behind their camp for some jigging. We went out off of shore a little way testing with a chisel as we went. After an hour of not catching anything, we decided that the ice just wasn't safe enough to be doing much moving. About that time my buddy found a fist sized rock in his sled and decided to throw it at the ice to check on it's condition. To our terror, it just went right through without a sound :pinch: that was possibly the scariest thing I have ever experienced on the ice. We Immediately got out of there. Once we got to shore, my buddies decided to see how thick the ice was. Surprisingly it was plenty thick, but completely honeycombed
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/bigredfishing/DSC01424_edited.jpg)
We went out that afternoon and the next day for some mixed bag fishing on a different lake. We caught a bunch of perch, and some nice bass.
Here is my buddy Ryan with a sequence of pics
