Fishing for LL salmon in Maine, what hook size would you guys recommend? Also shiners vs. smelts?

SMELT, SMELT, and SMELT
I wouldn't target salmon up here with anything but smelt, Compared even to other salmonoids up here they are very dependent on smelt.   Number 6 hooks works well for us

I'd use a quick strike rig, made with #8 hooks to start out.

Hope this helps,

Smelt are the best bait but in a pinch we have caught many salmon with small to medium size shiners.
