White Mtn. Ice for Turkey Day!!
« on: Nov 10, 2019, 07:59 AM »
  Freezing Degree Day formula indicates that I could have 6 inches of ice for Thanksgiving.   Thousands of rainbows stocked in local ponds I'm excited.  Two fish limit comes pretty fast on first ice.  Catch and release is hard to do with Power Bait!

Looking at the forecast it is looking good for Thanksgiving ice!

Looking good!  Hawkeye and I fished Thanksgiving morning last year however we did't dare go any deeper than mid thigh in case we had to walk out.  We might be doing it again this year if we can connect on some venison before then.  I am not having a good year so far with a miss in both Archery and Muzzleloader  >:(.

Not to be a buzz-kill, but remember that some waters are off-limit until Jan 1st.....

I hope your right Dick. Last year I fished a lake on Nov 15th. I will fish on 2-3  inches.  Yesterday it was wide open.

Any update on the ponds in the mountains? Seeing any ice forming yet? Been super cold even down here in southern NH.

 One inch of ice on local trout ponds. Some small areas kept open by loons and ducks.  Light breeze and far below freezing all day , colder tonight.  Only snow on ice along shoreline that froze before snow storm.
Might get brave see if I can chop out a piece tomorrow?

That’s very encouraging. Going to be an early year as long as it holds. I’ll probably do a trip up north this weekend to scout out early season spots.

??? Forest Lake , Thursday.  Still one inch of ice at shoreline.  Well below freezing nights don't seem to make more unless it further offshore than I want to check.  Regular snow showers won't help.  Two nights of single numbers should make moderate ice for Sunday But I still hope for Thanksgiving.
  I'm not about to try on 2 or 3 inches of ice with snow cover.  It's close but I want 4 inches of ice on sunny, 35 degree day for my first day on the ice.

I’ll probably look at some of the smaller ponds (under 100 acres) past the mountains. Bring a couple of traps if there is safe ice Sunday. Bringing all the safety gear.

With the temps continuing to drop (gradually) day by day, and the sun sitting lower, the surface water will soon reach the point where it can/will freeze solid.
All we can do now is wait patiently and count the days, and maybe do some scouting for potential "new" waters to try.

Single digits at night still not making much ice ::)
Checked three ponds today and couldn't find two inches of ice!!
Below zero tonight but still don't expect more than another inch of ice.  Hoping that Monday freezing rain and snow at least provide some white ice on top.  Still hoping for the day after Thanksgiving.

:P.  Only two inches of ice left on frozen ponds!  Some cold night coming BUT,  not enough to compensate for forty degree days.  I'm still hoping for sunny day and four inches of ice

I don’t see how there isn’t ice in NH. I found 3 inches in the middle of MA. Doubt it’s there now but was nice to get out for a few hours

Fingers crossed.   Few twenty degree nights might replace the inch we lost due to rain.

Trolled a lake today. Got one smb. Rainbow bite should have been hot.  It wasn't.  Saw some ice on various small ponds.  It was warm today. Windy tomorrow.  Won't be ice fishing anytime soon for me.

Just got back from up north. Was fishing on 9 inches of ice at a higher elevation pond in a notch. 6 inches black under 3 inches of white ice. Was a slow day but was great to get out again. I bet lots of small high elevation ponds are good to go now!  :)

im twenty minutes south of the white mountains. We have had alot of rain mixed with some very warm temps. Last friday it reached 50 degrees and it was around 50 degrees monday as well...imo its better to start fresh then having crappy ice laying around like in the midwest it makes for sketchy ice conditions when reforming on a crap layer.. we can only hope that it will start to drop back down to cooler temps from here on out..

I would consider high elevation to be above 2000 to 2500 feet. A lot of ponds above that are either designated trout ponds or don’t hold trout at all. At least in my experience

I can tell yea one thing, The weather last few days really hurt the ice. The lakes I usually hit early ice, really took a beating. I was out checking and fishing this morning. Old holes have opened into large spider holes as I call them. With this skift of snow we got could create some dangerous situation for people not familiar with the ice or those who do not carry a chisel. The ice that is left is soft and bendy as I call it. Hope next week fixes things.
