You can use pretty much any line you want.
Clothes line, jute, kite string, yo-yo string....anything you feel comfortable and confident with.

Of course, with "other" types of line there may be some performance issues like freezing stiffness.

I used 80 lb. braided Dacron from an old deep sea reel on mine.

Exactly what you want as far as Im concerned. I also make my own snelled hooks with Dacron and use snaps for quick change in the cold. Cusk do not care what you use. Mono sucks for this.
