Let's Get Some Ice Reports
« on: Jan 03, 2012, 09:47 PM »
Two local ponds in my area froze over last night and had about 1.25" of ice this morning. I see that easily doubling if not more by tomorrow morning with temps being in the negatives with the windchill. I'm sure there are some places North of me with similar situations. Let's get some ice reports going and get out on that hardwater ALREADY!!!

I drive over Monksville twice a day everyday and there is ZERO ice there. Sure its cold right now but the wind is not helping the ice form. 50* temps predicted for the weekend too. That aint gonna help :(

The Rockaway River at Denville is full of sheets of ice.  Looks like ice-out somewhere up north.
Waiting for the ice

Positive news, but I'm still not factoring ice into my fishing plans yet.

pass Longwood daily, this morning it was completely locked up.  from the road it looked like a bit more then a skim, made me happy.  Wife thinks im a loon, but what else is new there.  Going to hit up a few local ponds on friday with a spud.  Hopefully i'll be able to use it.

I checked a place in central Jersey that was open yesterday and it had 1 1/4 inches this morning. I'm sure some of the smaller ponds up north are fishable today. I'm prepping my gear and heading out tomorrow morning

i would think smaller ponds would be safe...just hard part is most of them are private, or so small we going to attract alot of attention standing out there.

I'm gonna put some fish sticks at the bottom of a kiddie pool and fill it with water.  I'll be on it by this weekend.  Reports to follow.

I'm a strong swimmer  ;D  In all seriousness first ice is nothing to mess around with. I check my 1st ice lakes daily and know where the bad spots are. I'll also have ice picks, ropes, waterproof cell phone case, life jacket, change of clothes and a buddy with me. I realize how crazy this sounds, but I'm fully prepared for a swim. To me the risk is worth it. If you're waiting for 4-6" it will be a while.

Just for an idea of what this cold spell has done around my place.., Sunday I checked a farM
Pond. I could walk about 3 foot onto it before the ice started to crack.  Monday was above freezing.   I got on it last night (Wednesday) I fished it on any where from 5-7 inches all across the pond (max 20 fow)
I'm not saying they're biting on Brant.  But they probably are

well you must be on some skinny ice/ very VERY small secluded pond. i just drove around for an hour and a half trying to find fishable ice and couldnt find any more than 2 inches and even thats being generous. i've given up hope, and am officailly starting to prepare for open water.

I was told these fish don't count unless I post pics  ;D

First NJ trip of the year for me, you can probably tell where I was. 2 1/2" of black ice (2" in some spots) with some white patches on top. I fished from 6am-5pm and only had 2 flags, 2 small pike at 24" and 29". Not the best day and not the best spot but I got out there and beat the skunk!

First fish of the year for me:

GREAT JOB!! i hope that ice will make it thru some of these warmer temps. i think it might. looks like each night will be dipping down below freezing so should balance out!
