Round Valley Reservoir
« on: Jan 27, 2011, 01:32 PM »
Has anybody fished it this season?  Any trout?  Wondering if any of the coves are frozen up safe.  I've heard it takes some pretty cold winters to be able to ice fish it.

Whatever ice there is in the coves isn't thick enough for fishing, but folks have been ice fishing on the swimming side for a number of weeks. I've been out there twice in the last two weeks and have caught pickerel on tip ups and jigging. I've also seen others pull up some nice bass on tip ups. The ice hasn't been particulary thick--only about 5-6 inches and two weeks ago it was real sloppy. Unless temps drop considerably over the next couple days, all this heavy wet snow might make for a very sloppy weekend of ice fishing at the Valley

Thanks!  I'm itchin' to try out the big lake on ice, but there's nothing we can do about the weather.  Do you know how deep the swimming side is?

You can fish most of RV all year but on open water. I know those RVTA boys slam 'em all year round. Jigging too!! Just not jigging thru the ice. Jim Stabile's report almost always reference how well they do down there. Plenty of Bows, Browns and Lakers.

the reservoir wont freeze ever. ha ha i think i heard a story last time it froze was 35 years ago. We get lucky if there is enough ice for a few days in a cove.

The valley is completely frozen over. Doubt it is safe too far off shore but i did see some tracks close to shore. Ice fishing there this week woo hoo :) Nobody there today though. 15 + gentlemen on the pond.

The date is correct on the picture. I took this picture personally. Down between the paved and dirt boat ramp is where Clinton rescue ran their drills for about an hour or two.

Another taken by myself.

This one was taken on  1/29/11 barely 6 days later, this goes to show you just how fast it can actually lock up if conditions allow it!! Thank Matt for the picture.

Im sure the snow helped it lock up, but yeah conditions have to be absolute perfect for that place to lock up.
