So on tips what does the consensus use?

And if its braided do you actually use mono against the reel?

The other way 'round. For me it's 6# Nanofil on the reel to a size appropriate (like 2#) fluoro leader.

If your question is if the superline needs backing that's a yes and no. You need something to keep the core of line from slipping on the arbor. You can use backing (mono or conventional Dacron braid) or just apply a piece of duct tape to the arbor before spooling up.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

On tip ups there really isn't any need to worry about slipping since you're not going to actually reel in fish with them. On my poles I've done a slip know around the reel and a piece of electrical tape over the line on the spool and just reeled the line on. Done that for years for all types of line and haven't had a problem yet.

I like mono for pan fish because it sheds water the best and freezes up the least amount.  Suffix braid with a fluorocarbon leader for walleye.

Trilene micro-ice for panfish and KastKing braid for everything else and tip ups.

10# Power Pro on all my jigging rods.  No leader or anything.

I typically go with triline ice line.  3-6# if fishing for panfish or walleye.  Seems to work well, but I couldn't tell you the difference between ice line and regular line.

I think the difference between ice and regular line is higher price for less line for the ice.

I tried some 2.3# tectan on a black Betty free fall and got my jig to the bottom faster than any other mono. Tectan is a type of mono but only half the diameter of regular mono.

What is the best tip up set up for Pike? Line and hook specifically. Thanks
