I have tried circle hooks for crappie during open water. I didn't like it. I didn't get a good hook up ratio. I don't think they pull hard enough on the take to make the circle hook effective, got a much better hook up with just a standard jig head. Hope that helps.
I start 3 to 4 feet off bottom maybe 5 or 6 in deeper water. Since crappies are usually suspended and looking up for food. Flasher helps find where the fish are holding. Put them around that depth.
eagle claw crappie hooks - like tru-turns. when targeting crappie and perch, I use a size 4
Use a #14 or #16 treble depending on the make. #14 Eagle Claw or #16 Mustad are about the same size. Your hook up rate will be much better than a single hook
Tru turn hooks work well on tip downs.
