Today's On Ice Report
« on: Apr 12, 2015, 06:32 PM »
The last few weeks I have been working my butt off hauling supplies up to my lake property so I can build my cabin this year.
I have hauled over 25,000#'s of materials by trailer and then snowmobile into the site. Today was the last day though as the portage over the point that the ice road runs is thawing and by next week it will be a mud bog. Lots of water on the ice on both sides of the portage and the launch ramp where it begins. The trail from the lake to my cabin (100yds or so) is pretty beat and getting bare as well.

Here's a few shots from this weekend.

The portage and launch.

My trail.

And a few shots from the week before.

The missed time fishing due to all the work you've been putting into staging will be so worth it!!  I am looking forward to updates of the build.

I'm taking 6 weeks holiday from late June to early August to stay out there and build away.
Will have some time to do a bit of fishing here and there.  ;)2

Looks like a lot of handling of lumber but will be well worth it in the long run.

I still have been able to figure out which ice road truckers came to Washington state to haul timber. Might be the guy that ran with the gal trucker.

Beautiful country, you picked a real nice spot for a cabin.

Yes, looking forward to the build too. Takes a lot of planning to get everything you need to the site, can't run down the street to the hardware when you run out of nails!  ;D

Haven't really done much right out front Corny.
About a mile South is really good at times.
Need to put some time in on my bay though. Caught some nice lakers across from my place before.

The red X is where I'm building.
The point South and around to the West where the river enters is very good for lakers and pike.
The shoreline to the NE (from 12-2 o'clock) is laketrout spawning water that is good in late fall.
The two points on the opposite shore are good also.
   ;D

Very envious.  Curious about many things but primarily your foundation. Concrete?  Couple of bags at a time?  I'll be logged into IS just to watch your progress.  Thanks for sharing

Now the hard work starts - building the cabin, but it will all be worth it in the end.  I see you got a larger size "Smitty Sled".   I use a version of the original smitty sled to haul my "Fish Trap" hut and gear when there is deep snow. They do work well.

Going to be pinned directly to granite bed rock.
Foundation will be PT 8X8's and 6X6's on saddles epoxied into the rock.
There will be 12 of these posts which will be connected with 2X10" rim joists around the top.
The open space around the perimeter will be 2X4 conventional framing then the whole works will be sheathed in 1/2" PT plywood.
It will end up being a crawl space under the main floor of the cabin.

To make sure the saddles are properly supported if they are not flush to the ground because of uneven surfaces I will fill underneath them with non-shrink grout.

Might need a couple of bags of concrete mix to make a level threshold for the double doors that will enable access to the crawl space.

Remarkable.  Good luck with this endeavor.  I'll be watching your progress for sure.  I also noticed you guys get some great lumber up there.  You'd have to hit 3 or 4 Home Depots down here just to find a stick or two as nice as the entire bunk in your photo.

Yeah, a lot of the lumber is pretty decent.
Some edge lumber with a bit of bark here and there and a few pieces with splits but good for the most part.
