Abandon Flip-Over for Hub?
« on: Nov 30, 2021, 08:23 AM »
I'm contemplating selling my flip-over Thermal X and moving toward an insulated hub/pop-up style shack.  My main reason for this is that if I want to take the ATV and flip-over out fishing, I need to pull a trailer for the ATV.  I'm thinking if I went to a hub type shack, I could fit everything in my 8' bed and not have to pull a trailer.

Have any of you worked through this dilemma?  What did you do?

I use the flip over when I might want to move around, usually jigging. For tipup fishing I generally bring the hub because it's going to sit in one spot all day. I do what it takes to transport the equipment, usually in/on a trailer.

Depends on how mobile you want to be.a flip is alot more mobile than breaking a hub down and moving a bunch of times.but are great if you set up on fish and plan to sit on them all day.

I switched from flip to hub last year and won't go back...
It's lighter...even insulated...about 25#.
Easier to transport and stow away.
They are slower to put up and take down...but worth it to me.
More room. I use a 3-4 man fishing solo most of the time, but it will hold 2 guys comfortably with some gear. I just don't like to be crowded.

Most days I'm out and moving around so don't use it. But if I plan to sit for awhile, I'll pop it up.

yeah, as others have said, depends on how mobile you want to be.

Pop ups are great if you know you wont be moving or maybe moving once.

Pullovers are better suited for moving a lot.

There is no right or wrong answer, its up to you.

I am always moving, so flip over for me, I use a hub if it is overnight or a group trip. Rare is the day I park on one spot for long.

I'd want an ATV and flipover. Pulling a trailer is not a big deal. Setting up and moving a popup sucks.

I prefer the flip over as well. A lot more mobile and it is nice at first "walk" on ice as I can take everything with me in the tub. Also a lot easier to set up in the wind.

why not just get a hitch rack for the flip over?  make a tarp cover for road gunk.

No hitch on the pickup or ATV at this point.  That's maybe not a bad idea though, hadn't thought about it, thanks!

When I use my hub, I tend to stay in one spot.  With my flipover, I move more and have room for more people if someone wants to come along.  I have room to store both, and each has a purpose. I wouldn't sell either.

I hauled my Bayrunner around on a hitch rack for 2 seasons behind my winter beater Rav4, worked well. Like mentioned above just get a 6'x6' tarp to cover it with. Because the Rav4 was so small the loaded rack blocked the tail lights so I had to put a set of trailer lights on the rack but a truck should be big enough to not have its tail lights blocked...

How do you pull a trailer without a hitch on the pickup?

Just have a ball mounted on the bumper- no hitch.

My idea is a bit different.  Add a hitch to your truck (this is a good idea even if you don't do anything else), Add a hitch carrier (also useful), build or buy a track sled.  The track sled goes on the carrier, the rest of your gear goes in the bed of the truck.  Makes pulling a flip over much nicer.

Same.  I have both and the flip is great if I'm not dragging it by hand on a lot of snow, but since I'm nearing 60, the hub is much lighter when I'm not taking my wheeler out.  The only downside to the hub is setting it up by myself when it's windy.

I have had many different portables over the years. The hub style is roomy and makes a lot of sense, ...if you don't mind setting it up and tearing it down. I also took extra steps to dry my when not in use so after ever trip where it got wet (most), I would open it up in the garage for a day or two.

Was awesome to have on super cold days when the family went with me. I like being mobile though so no longer use one. The group that I fish with are not mobile but none of them ever liked using the shelters so was a waste to keep my last hub style and sold it.

If you are just looking for a wind break,  you can stand up most regular sleds vertically (jet sleds) against the wind and sit in side of it.

It would be ideal if you had both.  Ill stick with the flip just because its better for run and gun and more flexible.
