When time allowed. I'd fish right up till dark, and would be picking the up the last 5 traps with a flashlight. I'd often have after dark flags, and not be able to see them until i walk up to the trap. never tried anything later than that, but have caught a few when it was pitch black.

p.s. not fun trying to remove a treble hook in the dark ;) ;)

I have caught Pike at night but more like a fluke.  It was just by pure chance.  I was over like 35 or 40 fow and the pike was 30' down.  I thought it was a crappie but when it bit and started to do the pike run.  Well that was it.   It was about 3 am.

Other than that, I do not known them to be night biters.

Twice i've caught a pike after dark and both times there was an artificial light source. One by lantern light shining down the hole. The other was from lights from a dock/marina lighting up the water.

ONLY ONCE LAST WINTER.  CHECKED THE TIPUPS AT ABOUT 9 PM THEN WENT BACK TO THE SHACK.  JIGGED WALLEYE FOR 2 HOURS AND THEN CHECKED TIPUPS BEFORE HEADING BACK TO CAMP AND CAUGHT A 36" PIKE IN 14' OF WATER.  WASN'T A FULL MOON OR ARTIFICIAL LIGHT SOURCE.  DANG THING SWALLOWED THE HOOK TOO, SO IT DOES HAPPEN, BUT NOT VERY OFTEN. GOOD FISHIN' - OH

if I were staying much past sunset, a lantern would be the best idea.... I will be trying that sometime...

I have never had much luck at night ice fishing for pike.

For me, it seems that once the sun goes down I have half and hour of pike activity and then, nothing.

I did get one pike at night a few years ago.
It was a clear night with a full moon, so the bit of light may have helped, not sure. :-\

I tried an all nighter last year for pike and had one small one bite at about 3 a.m., with chew and screws all night. I also know an angler who got a 34 and a 36 on an overnight trip, but his was during a full moon.
Pike fishing is a like a cruel mistress that is too beautiful to leave.
