Looking for a new rod
« on: Oct 30, 2013, 08:40 AM »
When I headed to class this morning I was greeted by a solid dusting of snow, and it got me thinking about the upcoming season (more than i already was.) I'm looking for a rod in the 40" range, for jigging lakers and pike. preferably a baitcasting setup. Probly gonna run 25lb fireline. I currently have a 38" frabill ice hunter, heavy action, loaded with 10lb fireline crystal, that handles most of my heavy duty fishing back home (central VT), but as a student of Paul Smith's, I am now surrounded by lakes and ponds containing pike, and some have lake trout. So if you guys with more experience in the predator area were to be in the market for a rod like I described, what would you buy, and what you would stay away from, and why? Thanks in advance.

I just make my own rods.
They seem to work OK for big pike and lakers.   ;D

Jason mitchell mackinaw rods are pretty sweet. I got a 36" mh mackinaw rod last year. At $35 canadian a sweet deal. I used to swear by st. Croix ice rods but at almost double the price for a lesser quality.  Cheers jeff

Jason Mitchell Mackinaw rods would have been my first choice,(own two) but Clam bought them out last year. The new blanks are heavier now - there med. heavy is like there old heavy. Would be ok for them 40" pike, a lil too heavy for the Lakers - imo...

They do make a 28 inch medium I haven't been able to find. May be worth checking out
