Warming temps will deteriorate the structure of the ice. What you have walked on all day may collapse as the warmth eats into the ice.

This is a 2 and 3/4” piece of black ice that I pushed throug. Was able to pull it out for a pic and get off the ice and stay dry.

Same thing for me last Friday. I was fishing 4-5 inches of decent black ice that was handling 3 spud hits in the am, but by the afternoon 2 hits was poking through and there was water all over the ice, and this was before 2 days of rain so I imagine a lot of places are going to be shot especially after this upcoming Friday, Saturday.

My prediction is a loss of ice mostly through surface melting (not the rotting like you would find near ice-out, with the sun getting high in the sky).

We could lose several inches with this storm.

On the plus side, the less ice we have the faster we should make ice once the temps drop back down.
