Clam runner kits
« on: Dec 21, 2010, 11:04 AM »
I was thinking if puchasing a runner kit for my clam nanook.

But fear that installing these would make the sled pull harder.

I pull it manually. The Clam website states that it  makes the sled track straighter and glyde easier, but I am assuming being pulled by a snowmobile.

anyone with any info, please advise.

I run a Frabill with their runner kit, it can't be too much different.  I put mine on for pulling with an ATV, but it pulls a lot smoother when pulling by hand as well.

There's less contact on the ice so it does pull easier.  If you want it to pull straight, make absolutely sure they are install square to the edge and in parallel.

Mine pulls easier with high density plastic runners on it. I made my own for about 8 bucks.

Check out my posting on this thread...Before the UHMW runners and with all my gear, I would have to stop lots, now it is so easy to pull...I used a half sheet of UHMW which cost $42.00

yup, lots of posts on "uh" plastic, but its the same stuff cutting boards are made of.  I picked up a left over sheet at a local plastic dist.  Just cut the stuff on a table saw and install with ss hardware, but there are whole posts on the runners, good luck.

They pull easier with the runners and you will extend the life of your sled.  Cheaper to replace runners than the sled.

I just cut down some snow skis that I got at a yard sale.  Works for me.  I wore thru the bottom of my first flip up by pulling it without runners.

I have a Nanook also. I put the runner kit on.   So much easier to pull than my buddys without.  Plus it keeps the bottom from wearing out.   A no-brainer IMO. ;)

BlueDuck,

I had a Frabill and put a set of water skis on the bottom, worst thing I could have ever done.

Pulled great, to great,  on a first ice outing with about 4 inches of black ice, no snow and 30 mph wind gust, need i say more, a new sport was invented that day called ice sailing ;D

What did you use to make your runners? I pull by hand but it'd be nice to throw some on for durability but spending $50 seems a little much for the small beating it gets.

I just installed the Clam runner kit on my Guide.  Install went well, although it sure would have been nice to have another set of hands!  I will try it out tomorrow behind the ATV and see how it goes.  Not expecting any problems though given that the runners seem solid and a part of the sled after bolting each runner down in 9 spots.

I don't know what the new Clam runner kits are like, but a few years ago I put on the ones that have several deep notches in each runner.  What a PITA, it made the sled 10x harder to pull, the runners just sucked into the snow.  I took them off and put UHMW plastic runners on and have never looked back.  You can find 3-4" widths in varous lengths many places on the internet for cheap.  I'll never put anything else on my shacks.

I know someone else that had the same problem with Clam's runners.

I use surplus hyfax for snowmobiles.

I put the runner kit on my Trapper & it pulls super easy on the ice, grass, gravel you name it.  Very nice & saves on the sled life as well.
I strictly hand pull my shelter.
