Sounds great to sleep in, but I move way too often, and many of the best waters I fish, I hike into... For others that are happy to pick a spot and stay (I try not to jig a hole more than 3 minutes if nothing is happening) and fish waters that are easy to tow something onto, it would be slick, but it would be wasted on me. I will stick with throwing money at my boat I use on the salt...

Heck no, would be a complete waste of $$$ for my run and gun style of fishing out in open air. That kind of scratch would go towards a proper bigwater boat.

Permanent ice shacks are the best! If you haven't spent a weekend in a shack you are missing out. That's just my opinion of course.  :)

The waters I fish would new support something like that. The best I get is 6 inches of ice for a few weeks only.

I would rent one for several nights somewhere out west but would never want to own one..

When you're pushing 60 , run-n-gun has a different meaning when there isn't an outhouse in sight & your a step slower than ya used to be.

We don't get enough ice and it doesn't last long enough around me to ever use that

Yes, hardsides are the best. You can still run and gun from it, use as base camp or night fishing. You NO guys haven't stepped foot in one, otherwise you'd get it! Take a drive through ice country, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota or the Dakotas and you'll see hundreds of these on some of the bigger lakes. Nothing better than a hardside!

I've had one and I'd never own another, even if I was still living in MN. More hassle than it was worth.

I'd buy 1000 portables before I'd ever be shackled to a permy again.

I owned one and loved it. Pretty much nothing fancy, but I would stay on the ice for several days if I wanted. It had a storage box/bed for me and my buddies brought cots. My fishing buddies died and my son has small children so it sat in my driveway for a few winters and I sold it. It was a good place to store my portables in summer.

So 1000 portables x avg $500...you'd spend $500,000 on portables? Lol yeah right. You can still be mobile from the hardside. To each their own and if you can afford it do it, most people enjoy their hardsides, hence the huge market.

My feelings exactly.  This would be my way to go -  with that amount of money that should cover my rental fees for quite a long time

I'm pushing 80 and don't get around well anymore. I don't do cold well either! Give me a hardside and an enclosed side by side and I might just get back out there again!!  :flex: ;)2

I have a side by side with a heated hard cab, a two person flipover and two Eskimo popups. What I look for are calm days for getting set up. That can be a stretch during South Dakota winters.

Age ain't nothing but a frame of mind. My buddy just took an 89 year old gentleman out on the waves of Lake Erie for a Walleye trip. Handled it like it was nobody's business. Said he'd do it again in a minute.

That is the exception to the rule , and god bless him , a buds father was 90 and went Turkey hunting , looking at longevity in the family tree has a lot to do with it

And to keep it going... met up with an old "acquaintance" around this time last year. Will be 100 in February and still deer hunts. Sharp as a tack. He is a retired funeral director. I asked him his secret to longevity and didn't miss a beat... Embalming fluid. Lol.

I’d do it. If I had the money that is. I’d have to have millions though because if all I had was enough to buy that, it’d be the last thing I’d buy…

Same. I'd rather use the money towards a nice boat....letting someone else take care of it. Store it, upkeep, drive it. All I'd want to do is ride and fish.  ;D

Only if I was going to get big into burbot fishing. Staying out all night would be a lot easier with all the amenities.
