*disclaimer* I will not be giving info on where I was I caspian I promised I wouldn’t tell.
So I’ll start my tale 2 days prior. Me my dad and brother decided to spend some quality time together and decided to jig for lakers as we’ve heard it’s a blast. Well we fished till 12ish and left my old man being the only one to catch any (he got 2 keepers). I however was determined to catch one after watching him catch them because they seemed to put up a good fight. So yesterday I decided I was going today and was going to catch me a lake trout. I Got there early around 5 and decided to go try and find some smelt for bait..... welll that didn’t work as I misjudged how far out I was and drilled through and hit the bottom of my auger off bottom (still cuts just not as good). At this point the sun had come up and I could t find any snelt when I got a message from an acquaintance I’d been talking to on Facebook. She said I could join her so when she got to the lake we set off and hadn’t arrived at the spot 10 mins when I hooked a small laker not bad but I wanted a good one so I moved to hole after hole not getting many looks until I was looking on my screen and saw it a red mark so I dropped my jig down and the chase began I’d drop down he’d follow I’d go up he’d go up and up and BOOM! He smashed it! And let me tell you I was using a UL st croix with maybe 4-6 lb test and that reel was a screaming. I felt like I was hooked on to a train I’d get maybe 5 cranks in and he would take it all back out and then some. finally after a few minutes I got him up a solid 19 inches. Well after that I caught one bigger at 21inches and I was ecstatic thus was my best day for lakers yet. However the day was to get better after a while the bite slowed and my new friend decided to check a few areas nearby. Started getting Em it seemed one after another for a while then they slowed down. At the end of the day I ended up with 20 fish caught 2 kept.here’s some pics although I didn’t get a photo of some as they were too small. Laker slayer! ;D Sounds like an excellent day on the ice. The trout bite gets tough this time of year, but when they're hungry, they're hungry! I can't imagine catching that many fish in one day, let alone on an UL rod. What a blast! Thanks for sharing.

Where's the best place to park if we're going to be on foot? The ice here is getting pretty sketchy, so a road trip this weekend sounds like a good idea to me.

I always jig with swimshads and the lakers crush them.

Yup I was using a mimic minnow rainbow pattern and they were smashing it

How did it look today? I’m hoping to go tomorrow morning. How much snow/slush? Will I regret bringing my heavy 2-man flip over?

Only went for a few hours today but still plenty of ice, I didn’t measure it but I’d say it’s still 15-17”. 5-6” snow on top of ice, people driving all over. We just jigged for perch today, no laker fishing.

I was out there today too. Pulled up a few smelt early on, and that was the key for me. Piece of smelt on a spoon, bounced occasionally on bottom. Picked up 9 fish in a hour this way. Once the smelt were exhausted, so was the bite!

Indeed.
(2) 8-9" smelt I took home for dinner tomorrow, and a couple smaller ones I used for bait.
Lost a big laker that hit my haji I was using on the smelt.
Lost another 5' under the ice that hammered the smelt tail I'd set up on a gumball jig head.
Had a great time, lots of fun people there.
Too bad season is coming to a close, would like to get another weekend up there to dial in on the tactics!

It was a tough bite yesterday only managed 2 fish only stayed till 1 though sad th season is pretty much over

Slow day as well. Two buddies and I tried for about 3.5 hours starting at 3pm. Lots of fish on the finder, decent number of chases, but no hits. I think I hooked a smelt at one point and lost it :-\ Still a beautiful afternoon!

It does, he might have been referencing other ponds/lakes in the area but all fishing on Caspian closes the 15th and doesn't open again until 2nd Saturday in April. There are others open year round
