Smitty sled V.2
« on: Jan 16, 2023, 11:19 AM »

Upgraded my Smitty from 2x10's and an old pallet!  The whole getup empty weighs about 25 pounds.  Pulls like a dream!

Tall boy

Looks like a dream to pack up and stow away though

It folds up nicely!  The platforms are from Harbor Freight and are rated to 250lbs each.  Pulling through snow is a significant improvement over my old wooden sled.

Wapiti406 - Good work.  How did you attach the platforms to the skis?

Started by trying construction adhesive, but it reacted weird with the rubber footing of the platforms and wouldn't cure.  Ended up using carriage bolts counter-sunk into the ski beds.  I fashioned some 90 degree brackets from strip steel that I riveted to the platform legs and ran the carriage bolts through.

It was a lengthy process since I'm not handy with these things.  Took a lot of trips to the hardware store for various bits and pieces.

Looks great though.  And no project is ever quick and easy as it first looks, that's half the fun!

Lol, nothing quite works out as we envision it, do the same myself, nice work.

I like it. I was just talking about making a second sled with skis with one of my ice fishing buddies. Nice work

Not sure what Wapiti shelled out for the work platforms but I'm guessing about $40 each. Not an unrealistic price. For interested parties, I did some mousing around and found and found a 2 pack of Gorilla brand HD 300# platforms at Home Depot, delivered to your home for $85: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Gorilla-Ladders-47-25-in-x-12-in-x-20-in-Aluminum-Slim-Fold-Work-Platform-300-lbs-Load-Capacity-2-Pack-GLWP-47-2-Pack/313616804 Not sure how long this deal will last.

That's about right. $38 at Harbor Freight.  Traded a bottle of booze for the skis and had many trips to the hardware store but only spent maybe $20 total there.
