How much snow do you still have on the ground? Steve
DrifterSounds like you need to pick up one of those little light weight 5 inch saws. I bought one after I cut off the ends of the 2x10 floor joists on a huge basement over hang one time. Seems like it was 40x80 feet if my memory is not totally failing me. My commercial skill saw weighed a ton.
Cool tool, Drifter. I noticed it has a max cut depth of 1 1/6". Down here in the lower 48 2x material is generally 1 1/2" thick so it would not allow for the rim joist to be fully recessed into the stud. You could also use a router or even a dado blade on the circular saw to make the notch that much faster.
I was thinking the same about the depth of cut with the versa saw. If you do like I do to get a straight eave I strike a chalk line then use me 5 inch to cut the ends off so they are straight, the versa saw is not going to get it done.I am not sure about the name of the one I have but I think it is a Skill. It is a left handed cutting saw that takes some getting used to. I think my son has mine so I can not go look for sure.
Just curious as to why your notching the board into the studs? Not being a smart alec. is it for the look? 4 31/4 inch spikes per stud would more than meet code for hanging a rim joist on the wall. I've just never done it that way. Rob
Well the winter is mostly done with the days becoming longer and brighter so it's time to start preparing for this years cabin building exercise. I got out to the property in January to check out how my place survived over the winter.Just like I left it but with snow everywhere. I have been out to the cabin the last couple of weeks hauling tools and supplies as well as packing and grooming trail for the heavy work.
Drifter ditto OldSailors comments , I thought you were going to tell us one of the windows got damaged in transport to the cabin . I'm assuming you carry a cell or satellite phone among your gear to be able to call for help if you have a major problem. May your snow mobile's radiator not be to badly damaged . One day this incident will be one of the cabin build stories you will share with friends.Steve
Did you work on the cabin at all this weekend, or just haul material to it??? You need to get busy!! We're suffering withdrawal down here!!!
