Title: gotta keep it going
Post by: C.C. on Apr 11, 2005, 11:55 AM
I just checked in today at 12:45 and there is no new posts since yesterday. I just thought I would start this thread so those of use who just have to do it can just keep this going. I guess we should give an ice report so the mod's don't think we are just trying to boost our posts. There is no new ice to report here in central PA YET but it's coming ;D

We still have 27 inches of solid ice at my favorite high elevation lake. Every year it seems like I'm the first one on here and the last one off. Its tough when I could fish on ice over 8 months a year and people come and go so quick here. They start talking about ice off in March. Must be depressing. Condolences also go out to some of my fellow countrymen in other provinces that still have lots of good ice and the season closed over a week ago (due to gov't regulations). Life sucks for you fellas.

Like I said earlier Meadowpikeman, condolences. You will probably have ice till mid-late May and you get shut down in a few days. That sucks. :'(

I like the swizzel stick idea Arch dut maybe Stump could buy a block of ice and when he need's to cool a beverage down he could just get his auger out and shave a little up. That would be a good way to keep in shape.

Plenty of ice here in my Deep Freeze ;D I just had a tray of Cubes set up in less than two hours  It's snowing here in Maine which means winter is on the way ;D. I've been hanging out in the Maine room but I will check here everyday just to make sure it's alive. I've got a lot to do this summer but I love Ice Fishing too much to forget this place. Keep Cool......Max

Rock Bottom haven't fished athapap a lot in the winter but it can be pretty good. This year I heard moblilty was a huge problem as was unsafe ice.  The guy from flin flon we sometimes go with has caught some true monsters out of athapap, his best on the hardwater is a 38 lber, topped buy a 46 in open water.

Sounds like you should move off the flats meadowpikeman out to the mountains here in BC. No regulations keep us off most areas, just the rivers. When the ice is done, so am I.

Well I'm still hanging in there too Terry and am still on 20 inches plus of ice but with some of the warm days we have been having the shores are opening . Last year I still had truck on ice on April 25th but if I'm lucky I will still be able to walk on this year at that time . Definately getting a mean tan though . ;D

May be a while before the bigger schools of stripers make it up that far as we are still waiting for them here in NJ. The schoolies are starting to become more frequent but no biggins yet.

Also, no new ice being made in NJ yet. But soon.

I'm still on ice here in north central BC but I have to head up to the mountains as low level is getting a little soft and a little open water around the shore. High level should be good for another 5-6 weeks but tough slug getting up there.

Title: Re: gotta keep it going
Post by: MikeThePike on Apr 19, 2005, 09:18 PM
Arch, I don't think that snow will help out to much. Looks like we'll have to wait about 8 months to make it back out on the ice (even tho I plan on rigging my tip-ups for open water fishing on my private lake in PA  :)), unless you have access to a 1 acre freezer and if thats the case let me know where, I'll bring the auger and some beers.

Heck, it wouldn't be the first time it ever happened :angel. Russ, I'll be in mill creek this weekend hunting. I'd give you my cell number and we could meet for lunch but there is no reception up there. Did you get your little helpful present yet?

Man you guys must be from eastern Canada. Probably Ontario or Manitoba. We don't drive this late on our lakes here in BC. If we do we build ramps from shore out to good ice. That ice is not for driving on boys but good for walking on for sure. Sorry I won't be getting up to high elevation lakes this year but a buddy likes to go and catch some bows. He has gotten 8 months on ice last year fishing up higher. I will see if he can take his camera next time he goes. Doesn't have a digital though but I can scan.

I think that it would be weird to have ice as long as some of you guys have it. But open waters alright too one thing it good for is take the boat out and locate structure for the next time we can walk on it. we have had no ice here since april 2nd but we went up north the day it was coming off and fished but it took a 20 foot ladder to get on the ice up there so we did not have much time left. :( :( :(
Title: Re: gotta keep it going
Post by: TGF on Apr 28, 2005, 10:47 PM
Ahhh shucks guys, we only need a month of open water to locate structure. I can have 8 months of ice but I'd like 11. Guess I should move up to the artic.

This is the way I see it. The expanded archery season is only 4 months and a week and a half away here in Maine. when it gets here, then regular hunting season with gun is only two months away. after that if the guy has the floats we can start smelting and a month after that Ice fishing season opens ;D As I sit here pondering cutting the grass  :-[ drinking my coffee. Long live the Hardwater    take care....Max

Buddy got back from the mountain lake we like to go to. Says its getting a little soft on the top. Still 24 inches of solid black ice. Cooler temps overnight should resolidify. They pulled 10 rainbow thru the ice. Biggest was 3.2lbs. All ice on our low level lakes is gone with small amount left on north facing shores.

I tried this "hunting for turkey" thing and I just don't see it. You have to go before 11 am and thats when most old people are out and about, well a tank of gas and 3 coffees later I finally got one...a butterball for 49 cents a pound at the Hannaford in Windham. You've  got to fight the old people and I don't understand the calling stuff, people were looking at me kinda funny in the Cereal aisle blowing on the call waiting for something to happen. The turkey never called back, probably because he was frozen. I can't wait for Ice Fishing....these other sports just aren't my cup of tea. Max ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: gotta keep it going

Open water is the second most important time of the year to an ice fisherman. You have ample time to ready for next year. Research new gear, secure financing, rest, plan. It gives the fish time to grow. What you this offseason will determine how you do next ice season. Specially if you imprenate your wife and it ruins your ice season like i did this past season. So be warned. How was I supposed to know that 4 minutes of fun would mess everything up?

sounds like you played it just right seag...in a few year ,dependind on exactly where you fish that little on could mean up to 15 more tipups in tyour arsenal...in maine it would only be five ...not to mention kids are great for going to get you a bait!!
Title: Re: gotta keep it going
Post by: archbishop on May 23, 2005, 01:37 PM
wow 4 minutes my wife says your wife is lucky ;D
but like scott said thats just all the more tip-ups and when you need he can run for the flags and then run back to get the bait for you when you get one on it may have messed up one ice season but look to the future my friend you just made out in the long run
Title: Re: gotta keep it going
Post by: Mr.Seaguar on May 23, 2005, 09:26 PM
It didnt ruin the season. I did make it out a couple dozen times. This next season our first child will be able to come along. She will be 4 and able to handle days that arent too cold. I shack fish almost exclusively. I know some dudes think shacks arent even ice fishing. So yeah, a few years down the road I will have another buddy. Gonna need a big shack then.
Title: Re: gotta keep it going

The guy's that don't think shack fishing is real arn't that shiney. I got my kid's out one time last winter without a shack and the wind blew about 30 mph. That was no fun at all but look out this winter, I got a hut know. On another subject, the weather is 20 degreese below normal in my area today ;D Bring on the ice

i fished my first year with out a shanty brrrr now i got one and wont go back to being frozen even though most of the time i dont even go into my shany i wander around checking tip ups and bs'ing or cooking but when the wind whips real bad or its just plain ol' fridgid its nice to know you can go warm up for 30 minutes or so

lol 20 degrees below normal man your lucky its only 10 below normal around here :'(

i jig while bs'ing ill take my pole with me and jig a vacant hole and bs with people i dont wander to far from my tip ups thats one of the best parts of ice fishing the freedom to not pay to much attention some guys lock themselves in there shantys and just peek out every 15 mins to check there tip up and thats fine i save that for crappy days but on a nice 35-40 degree day im out goofing off with the kids making snowmen bs'ing and cooking i tnink i have add i can never sit still doing anything lol

Title: Re: gotta keep it going
Post by: Mr.Seaguar on May 28, 2005, 08:07 AM
Guys, it has to get warm in the summer. Thats when the fish grow. If it never got warm we would catch nothing but little ones. My method is to cut a bunch of holes and drag my shack to all of them. Then we fish them all and we go back to any that were good. So we fish good holes more than once but dont stay long at bad ones. My dad says I`m a pain to fish with. But he admits that you don`t worry about getting skunked. I make him carry the heater. Thats all he has to carry. If he didnt bring lunchpail, two coats, entire dum bucket of poles, he wouldn`t have to even carry that.

Thats the good thing about hunting season. Keeps the mind occupied after the 3 hot months. Some good open water fishing during the hot months tho. I been researching some new techniques for ice fishing here lately even. I never quit planning. I checked out a lake this week looking for ice fishing destinations. Have been checking on new shacks also.

7 1/2 months? That would put first ice Jan 15th. Possibly only 5 months if the ice is safe in late Nov, early Dec.

but I sure miss ice fishing with the gang... nothing like setting the traps in -10 mornings and jigging in the shack with some good friends and a hot cup of coffee.. then hearing one of your buddies yell... "FLAG!!!"

six more months.....six more months...

Well this is getting bad . :-\ I have managed to read everything about everything on icefishing rigging on this site and am now reading other sites too  and it's just making me crazier and longing for ice even more and yes even the dreams are occurring . :-\
I also think that all the manufacturers should be forced to show us all the new products now so that some of us who wish to beat the mad rush can make our purchases now . Ok, thats it, I'm taking an ice rod with me every time out for the rest of the open water season to to appease the ICE GODDESS and maybe she will reciprocate with early ice . ;D
Heck I'm even studying up on products I don't use just to prepare myself and keep in shape for the auger and sonar wars this winter . ;D .

Lets leave auger bashing out of this forum. The best augers are the ones that start and stay sharp. If we start bashing augers then we got to bash everything else. There should be in our little box next to our names some place to list your shack, auger and rod makers. Guys who dont use shacks can just put pn. For pneumonia. I know you guys are just joshing each other. If we could list what we use we would easily tell who to ignore because they use stuff like Eskimo augers, and they don`t eat perch, and they live in Maine. Everybody knows the only thing good to come out of Maine is Shawshank Redemption and a few interstates.

LOL lads . Yes we must stay fit to take on all comers and my 3 hp 10 inch Jiffy keeps my arms that way so I can shovel all the B.S. out the door . LOL . The Marcum LX-3 marks their skinny arses as they move in and my southbend stick used in combination with a shimano reel sets the hook and the Otter sled in conjunction with my John Deere snowmachine hauls them off the ice before it gets contaminated too bad . ;D LMAO

Or just for askin nice. Its gettin embarassingly dirty. Works better with the lid broken anyway. First one broke on accident (by careless fishing buddy)but this one I broke on purpose.

NO,no,no .Please do not send me one please . I don't need anymore extra stuff such as that Mr. Seaguar . As a matter of fact I have an insulated Plano bucket with working lid but that day some friends showed up with minnows in the bag and box so instead of transferring them over to it I just put the bubbler on the box and took it as is, and it worked like a charm . LOL  Thanks for the consideration shown though . Now if you want to take up a collection and send me a new handheld Marcum LXi I would accept . LOL ;) ;D

On minnow buckets the darn lids always freeze down on me. And its a son of a buck to get the scoop in and out with a lid on the floating ones. So I like the regular bucket looking ones with the lid broken off. Or a 5gallon pail if nothing else. Pail takes up a lot of room tho. I want a gyroscopic bucket that I can set on uneven ice and not worry about losing the bait. And it needs to be small. Like maybe gallon and a half. O I cant wait for safe ice. to See my minnows swimming away from some fat perch. Fun fun.

LOL lads . Well it seems I may have to put my instructors cap on and show you how to look after your buckets in the cold . LOL . ;D Once that lid is up there is no need to keep locking it down and also keeping the dripping net away from them helps to keep the ice from building up .  Seems your wearing your gloves and mitts to much if you can't feel them reach their breaking point before they do . LOL ;D .
Congrats to who ever is waiting for their new flasher to arrive and somebody here will enjoy it if your wife sees the UPS guy before you do. LOL ;D
I hear all my neighbours firing up their lawn mowers this eve so I think I shall go outside and fire up my auger just to jinx their grass growing days and give them the shock that the greenery's days are numbered because shortly we will be over the hump and countdown for ice is on the down hill side . ;D

What about gravity Trapper? How do i get around that obstacle? The lid just drops shut. So I snap them off. Works much better. Best way i have found to keep them less icy is keeping the shack warmer. I use a ice chip scoop to dip minnows up. Those little nets always froze up on me. O I cant wait for safe ice.
Title: Re: gotta keep it going
Post by: trapperdirk on Jun 20, 2005, 08:36 PM
Well mine drops down too Mr Seaguar but it doesnt latch on its own without help and for me anyway thats where my plano freezes because water will stick in the latch hole so I don't latch till I'm on way out of there . ;) Now the net I just use a 99 cent special that has a flourescent styrofoam handle which goes right back inside the bucket with the minnows . It will only freeze if the minnows do . ;) I'll dig it out and take  a pic if you want . ;D Oh and I think my bucket and net is better than yours is . LOL ;D The bucket wars here we come . LOL ;D

Yes Carpcatcher I only got the small otter at the time but wished I would have got one of the big ones now . :-\ If your using your otter of that size just to haul fish off the ice with then you are losing out on what it was intended for which was to haul rigging . That there baby was built solid and sturdy so that we could cram every possible toy in it so that we could go out onto the ice and hold full blown demonstrations on what we own and be the envy of all our icefishing compadres eyes . ;D Fishing ? heck thats not as much fun as gloating over those that don't have all the toys and then hearing  them begging their spouses to buy things that they must absolutely have and seeing their sleighs fill up too . LOL ;D
Don't forget to put a slider kit on the Otter and a solid hitch because next comes the snowmachine and ATV . ;D

Permanent shack???,what is a permanent shack. Most of the time we're lucky to have a month with cold enough weather to hold a temporary :'(. It doesn't make any sense at all, boat's with unlimited horse power on the open water but nothing on the ice.Something's just not right!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.  If anyone is wandering, we don't have any ice yet

Nah I just ran out and checked too Carpcatcher and if there is ice its not very thick, because I got a soaker . Good thing the Otter floats like a boat so my rigging stayed dry and nothing was lost . ;D

Just got back from Florida and boy it feels like fall around here compared to the 105 heat index last week in Florida.  All that heat is for the birds.  Now that vacation is over it should be all down hill from here.  5 1/2 months and we will be walking on water.

You went to Disney? you poor man. Luckily I am getting to work on Saturdays so I dont have to figure out what to do with my spare time. Just killing time waiting for fall and winter. And searching for new stuff that I cant catch fish without.
Title: Re: gotta keep it going
Post by: Icenutter on Jun 24, 2005, 07:13 AM
Yes, I went to Disney.  The funny thing about this is that we were supposed to go the week after x-mas last year and I talked my way out of it so it did not interfere with the possibility of early ice.  ;D  My wife just opened a business last Sept, and I told her that there was just too much going on in the business at the time and we need to go to Disney after school is out.  :D  Needless to say I was on the ice December 27th last year so my plan worked, but don't tell her.

Thats one thing different about me. I like mid winter much more than early and late. Late is questionable safetywise and early I have tougher time patterning the fish. I agree that the bite is usually much better.

You guy's aren't going to beleive what I found at a yard sale. The guy that was selling it said it was a super duper minnow bucket that he bought when he was in Canada. I can't beleive he sold it for 10.00.
Also here is a couple pictures of a tip-down rod holder that I made last winter. I made them from 1/4" solid counter top material so water will not hurt them at all. They work better than anything that could ever come from north of the border. (lol)

Arch Arch Arch. If she breaks it, you get to buy a new one. The best one her money can buy. If I was you, I`d go put it behind her car. I was talkin bout ice fishing with a buddy at work today. He was studying for an exam last January and never got to fish with me. He says he can`t wait for ice either. My dog chewed up my one man. I had absolutely no emotion. I did laff when I saw him pokin his head around the corner watchin to see if he was dead meat.If he wasnt a pheasant hunting machine he`d be a real headache.

i just wish we all had fish on the ice but we are coming down the home stretch just the rest of this month then the uneventful month of august, then sept is small game hunting, oct. is bow hunting and steelhead fishing, nov. is shotgun season then hopefully the ice gods will smile upon us and give us early ice in mid december

My plans are a little different. Sept is child #2 and last. October is Sharptail grouse and early muzzleloader. November is pheasants. December is Late muzzleloader. Hopefully Ice is Dec 11th so I dont have to choose between the two. But I got a lot of hunting plans in December so I will probably end up doing both sometimes. Hunting and fishing for a 3day weekend makes you glad to go back to work.

I tried deer hunting with a rifle last year. The season is in November which is when I want to pheasant hunt. I spent money on tags but didnt have any time to devote to it. So I blew it. This year I will do better. I will kill deers when its deer time and  I will shoot pheasants when its pheasant time. Last year was my first time deer hunting in a long time and I had some non-linear waterfowl issues.

my 3 kids b-days are 10/13 10/30 & 11/06 (talk about those long january's before i ice fished) that is when you take a week off of work help mom with the baby at night, sleep in a little and then hunt the afternoon or if the baby and mom slept in in the morning i would hunt all morning and be home with then in the afternoon, plus with newborns it usually takes at least a month to get the inlaws out of the house so why not hunt just say honey im gonna give you and your mom some time with the baby and time to talk ;D worked for me anyhow plus my wife loves venison and time away from me so its win win in my home

Your inlaws came over for a whole month? That would not happen here. My wife would kick her own parents out after day 4. They are incredibly annoying. My folks not so bad. Our due date is Sept 12. Probly be born late august. Our first one was born Sprt 24. I went hunting while mother and child were still in the hospital. I figure that if the kid is born August 25 it`ll be 6 weeks before early muzzleloader so by then I can easy skip out. I can take the 4 yr old along. She likes to go with daddy. Get her started young is my plan. She already loves boat fishing and shore fishing. Shes on her way.

longer than a month, my youngest is almost 3 and they still stop over almost everyday, unanounced mind you, but i just use them as an excuse, i tell her im sick of your parents "dropping in" all the time so i am going fishing/hunting so i dont have to deal with them ;D

I`m putting myself into a trance like SUperman does. Waiting for fall. Hunting cant get here soon enough. I don`t think Ive been this ready for hunting season in yrs. But its so darn hot. Its easy to stay home and save money cause its too hot to do anything that doesnt involve AC.  Just got to live one day at a time I guess.

I really used to be a summer person.  Now it's just a gap I fill between ice seasons.  In the summer I work too much to really enjoy life.  In winter I get to slow down and smell the roses as I always seem to have more time.  My hayfever kills me in spring and summer.  Just love the fresh sterile air of winter.  Last season I purchased a snowmobile to improve the ice fishing experience.  The result was even more reason to love winter, making summers even less tolerable...

It's funny, I read people's comments in the daily newspaper.  They complain of the frequent rain.  Then in an attempt to be "optimistic" they usuallly end with "At least it's not snowing!!!"  I can only think how deluded and deprived a life these people must live.

Heres why I hate summer. It`s such a headache to launch a boat solo. And my buddies always have to do what their wimmen want. I just tell mine I`m going fishing. So I`m supposed to fish on the schedule of their wimmen, when they are just gonna break up sooner or later anyway. Or launch the boat by myself. To heck with all of it. I did come up with a solution. Hire a guide everytime. Cheaper than owning a boat and odds of success much higher. I dont have to back it in, dont have to drive the boat, just set the hook and reel in. And, I get to fish from nice boats every time.

I am having a heck of a time finding a place to stay up on Sodus this winter.  Every web-site that I e-mailed with a cottage has not replied back.   :%$#!: May have to just wing it and find a hotel when we get there.  Would be nice to have a cottage though to cook hot meals.

I love summer.  The bass fishing here (Mississippi in the Twin Cities) has been phenomenal.  In the last week I've caught 10 smallmouth over 4 1/2 pounds.  And yesterday I got a walleye on a tube that was 27"!  With fishing and beautiful weather like this, it's kinda hard to sit and mope about not catching 8" craps through a little hole while freezing my sack off.

Lawrence next week, but it's just not as good from a boat.  Mabey I could strap a couple pontoons to the boat, cut a hole in the bottom, and throw some ice cubes in.  Oh well every day is one closer to the big day.

I was out playing with the ice rods earlier. I decided I like #2 Seaguar better than #4. Smaller, still very strong, pulls tight with smaller jig. Caught a lot of fish on it last year. Will catch more this year. Am coming up with new system to fish 4 days a week. Major part is not to impregnate wife before ice season and end up with first trimester devil woman when I want to go fishing. Lesson learned.

The weather is still hot here in central Pa.  The big cool down should be on it's way soon though. It's good to see that TFB didn't give up on all of use on here. Here are some word's for all of use to remember, if you say something and people respond in a negative way, normally they are jealous. Sometime's people tell stories that are hard for some others to believe but it is their story. If we all told store's of thing's that we did there would be many of them that others would say that couldn't be true. All I know for sure is I cant wait for everyone to come back here and get this site rolling again.

To beat the heat, I take a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with water and take it to a resturant and get them to put it in their deep freeze for a couple of days. Then I get into a speedo bathing suit in my back yard and take my trusty Auger out and I drill a hole into the ice almost to the bottom. Then I scoop the ice shavings out and fill it with beer. Then I get into my Portable Shanty in the 90 degree heat and curse the Summer and pray for snow all the while sucking down the now ice cold beer through a straw. A long extention cord with a small TV and I watch Ice fishing videos at the same time to give it the full effect except for the speedo of course. ;D    Long live the Hard Water...Max

Also I have been practicing for cooking on the ice when it get's here. This should help with any hunger pains that anyone has. It's two big pieces of deer loin marinated then grilled with mushrooms and onion's and some italian parmashone potatos. that would be good on the ice :o

Not at all small.  Lake George in NY.  Plenty of pressure ridges - you just won't catch me crossing any.  I saw quite a few other people take snowmobiles and trucks across them that day, though.
Title: Re: gotta keep it going

I meant along shore. we often have to drive over ice that is pushed up 1-2' in the air on big lakes. Kinda hard for cars. I seen a dude drive into one heave and get stuck tight last year. I looked at it and walked out. He decided to chance it. We could hear him spinning away for 20 minutes. Shortly, we saw a wrecker pull him out. Word to wise-if the ten guys before you walked out and this is apparent because their vehicles are parked beside the ramp, dont try to drive out. They arent coming to the rescue.

Post by: Chucker on Aug 16, 2005, 05:42 AM
Nah, shore was smooth from snow and plenty of other vehicles.  I was the last guy out that day, actually.  We walked out that morning, and I just drove out in the afternoon to pull off quicker at the end of the day, since we had a long ride ahead of us.

same here in upstate NY, we've had a few night of frost advisories in the Adirondacks already. The weather has diffidently changed from summer to fall, high temps are going to make it out of the 60's-70's. We need them to get down into the teens though.  ;D

Well now, here in southcentral Alaska the surrounding mountains have snow in the higher elevations and we have had a few mornings of frost.  However, not near cold enough to fire up the auger.  On the other hand the grouse hunting was very good last weekend.   Saw a few moose while I was beating the brush.  The best part- no mosquitos.  Hold on boys, the cold is coming... I can smell it.

I'll be gentle with you guys.  Here in Alaska things are looking pretty good.  I'll be heading out to drill some holes on Friday if anyone cares to tag along.  I was ready to go this weekend but the wind is blowing to hard.  I went hunting instead thinking the wind would not be so rough in the woods- wrong!  Spook a moose and saw a mess of woodpeckers.
