Ice season will soon be upon us. SW Montana is cold and there is plenty of snow in the mountains. Usually, the ice is not thick enough locally until the end of November. Georgetown Lake is usually first. I predict ice in the next 3-4 weeks around Bozeman. First ice is the best ice, but I prefer 4-5 inches minimum. I pulled out my sled, sharpened my auger, and am staging my gear.

I just checked Wadsworth here in GF and it is capped.  Only 2'' of soft ice with 4'' snow cover. We're not suposed to get above freezing for the next two weeks so it's looking good sio far.

Georgetown's capped and not too much snow on it. I imagine some of the smaller shallow lakes on the east side are as well and may be fishable very soon.  Cool temps and not much snow in the forecast.

It was -6 in Belgrade last night. Cold for a while and I am sure it is colder in the mountains. Hyalite Lake is a close lake that I enjoy fishing and it should be getting close. In the past, it has 5 inches or more ice by Thanksgiving. First Ice is the best ice!
