I was getting frustrated with my 2014 ion drill, as unlike newer models, it did not come with a center spike. I picked up a replacement spike for the Eskimo drill at Cabela's. In order to retrofit it to the ion, you have to drill out the centre of the auger shaft, also you have to drill a #11 hole cross ways to retain the new spike. Very happy with the results. Plan on testing it on the ice at Dief. on Wednesday. Flyboy

My guess is that it may starts better with blunt blades but also gets stuck more often in deep hole.

The spikes only purpose is to keep the auger centered. I always keep my blades sharp. I have never got my ion stuck. Flyboy
