Title: Humminbird Ice 45 or 55
Post by: diverdown on Nov 29, 2011, 08:25 PM
Hey guys looking for your imput on these 2 units. Is the extra wattage output, target line and soft case worth the extra $100 price difference between these 2 units.

Im usually fishing less than 35ft of water. And usually fishing in weed pockets or mud flats. Typically chasing 'eyes, perch, whitebass and crappies.

I got the ice45 last year it works great.  But it is the only flasher I've ever owned.

If you have the $$$ the 55 is just the big brother of the 35 and 45  but it has more opptions.

I bought the 55 because I got a killer deal.  I have never seen a 45 in action, but if it's anything like the 55, you won't be disappointed.  I enjoy the soft case

What kind of options? Other than the target line (i know how to read a flasher so its kinda useless) extra wattage output, different color palletes. What other options are there?

I think those are the extra options  I have never used the target line or the different color options.

I was stuck on the same decision, but opted for the 55 for the simple fact that I knew I would not wish that I had spent the extra money later. Plus the soft case is handy.

I think the extra colours and the soft case make the 55 worth the extra $

Go big or go home!  In reality I got the 55 for a good deal but I wanted it solely because 100 now is better than down the line wishing you had it.  And yes the case for it is nice to have.

The case is great $50 by sold seperatly, why not spend the last $50 and get the 55.

I have the 55 and the extra money is worth it, the case is great, it will help protect your investment and it fits perfect in a 5 gallon bucket for more protection.

I have the 55 and love the 6 color option and couldn't imagine not having the soft case. Just looked...the 55 can be had for $351.20 after tax, shipping and the mail in rebate. The 45 is $298.79 likewise but you don't get the case ...the 55 is probably the better deal ;)

I bought the 45 last week, and got the case online for $35 and the rebate. I really wish I would have got the 55 since in reality after I got the case and rebate it would have been a $20 difference.

Has been said before - the 55.  I really like the 6 color palatte as it gives you a better sense of what the fish are doing and lets you sort out size better (IMO).  I have also used the target line a number of times when a fish comes through at a different depth than what I am working.  For me these have typically been larger fish (I assume cruising pike) and it is kind or nice to be able to mark that depth (although I could probably remember it) and then set a tip up or a dead stick or watch to see if more fish come through at same level.  Just a note, this was my first flasher.

Tight Lines and Hard Water

I just picked up a 55 and I have a fl8 and a showdown. I went with the 55 due to the added color pallet, target line and the case.

The color separation is also key on the 55. I've fished mine for a few years now and have never regretted the extra bling that I tossed for the 55. I've fished with numerous Marcum, Lowrance, Vexilar models and I own the FL-20 as well and the 55 is absolutely my first choice everytime.
The soft case is key. The 6-color display is pretty cool. I don't use mine much, but everyone loves options. The target line is a nice feature for deeper water. If I'm not mistaken, the 55 has more gain output than the 45 as well.
