Might have to convince my buddy to dig the boat out so we can go jig lakers. I have never done it off the boat suppose you would have to wait for a really calm no wind day to keep your bait in the cone. Iv drop shotted for smallies in deep water with the finer before suppose lakers would be similar.

Or you convince a friend that has a bass boat (trolling motor) and quality electronics, and go have at it ;)

Down where I live I jig open water on the NYC Reservoirs for lakers and simply increase the size of the jig by 1/2 to 1 full oz to help keep the jig on the sonar in choppy/moving water. If it's dead calm, the vexilars work great, if not which is 90% of the time, we'll use regular sonar (Lowrance Elite 5 and 7) and just crank up the sensitivity and chart speed and you'll be able to easily track your jigs! Really cool watching a nice arch suddenly turn skyward to meet up with your descending Jig!!! Also, Power Pro Depth Hunter braid is great for open water jigging. It is metered just Leadcore with 4 colors; each color equals 25' and within each color, white hash marks signify every 5' of depth within the color so you'll know exactly where you are if you lose the jig on screen! I can tell you with confidence that the action on open water can at times be as much fun as the ice! You're constantly moving and jigging fresh locations which is along the same line of thinking as we do on the ice!!

I'll be jigging one of my local spots on Thursday since winter apparently is over down here! Lol!

MK

With that lead core, does it show up on the sonar more then floro or braid?

Sorry, should have been more clear. PowerPro Depth Hunter is a braid just like regular PP but rather than a solid color, the braid changes color every 25' to help the angler gauge how much line is out when trying to reach fish marked on screen but where the jig is lost due to boat movement. I have found it in 20 and 30lb test and I use a10' length of 15lb Seaguar Blue Label Fluoro for a leader. Depth Hunter does not show up on the sonar.

Got it/ thought you were using the lead line weight to keep it in the cone. I think they make a lead metered line as well. makes sense that metered line that's not lead would at least help you know how much is out, but does that mean you are not seeing your jog on the graph sometimes, when it's windy for example?  I've jigged open water on calm days with a graph but in wind I've struggled in 50+ fow

Yes, exactly! Often the jig wanders off the screen and that's where the Depthhunter becomes so effective and very precise. Using up to 2.5 Oz jigs help a lot on windy days.

Was hoping to maybe try jigging lake trout one day this year. Usually perch fish. Not looking good for either at this point.

I'm still holding out hope for a cold snap that gives us a few weeks over perch.
The angle of the dangle is directly proportionate to the heat of the beat.

I'm still holding out hope for laker waters. Last year i fished first ice on Schroon on February 7th or so .....  and George froze after that. Schroon has been iced over for a couple of weeks now so there is a legit shot we can still get ice on the King  ;D

But ...  i also think there is a legit shot the Bills make the playoffs next year  :o

Late next week the night temps really take a dive oooking at the extended forecast. If the wind stays away, it will lock the bays up again but I'm not so sure it will be cold enough to lock up deep water.

The passing of the front on Thursday will be the start of a shift which will trend towards colder, typical weather conditions.

If it happened last year, I have confidence it'll happen this year too.  Until then I'll keep making a fool of myself, muttering random stuff like somebody's jacker just went off....

Garmin striker 7 ff has the ability to pause and rewind on GPS and ff modes so you can review where you have been if you see something you want to mark

No thanks necessary you got it started and we fine tuned it from there.  Remember the double treble "mangler" spoon with half an icicle :o  It worked but not much fun for the trout you were letting go :P
