Probably not gonna happen...as of 12/6 water temp was still 46 degrees

I've been up there trolling, the last time being 2 weeks ago, and the temp was still in the high 40's. Still kinda warm. I'm thinking, if we're lucky, it will be mid January imo

already happening, but not with bait.   Smelt doesn't make a huge difference on those days.  If you want to experiment before they change the law, just rub your lure on some smelt that the lakers puke up.
On the those special big number days, you could probably catch 50 on a cigarette butt. 

Now big lakers on the other hand, I think that is where smelt could really help.

Well the few times we got out last year the fish were snapping.  I bet this year will be extremely good.   Can't wait to see what the salmon are doing either.

The day Logan's buddy had to be rescued near vets last year I was at 17 inside of a couple hours marking 5-6 in every hole.  Sadly ice conditions didnt allow for 50 to be caught!

just clarify he's an acquaintance iv seen 50 between 2 people in 2 hrs could have easily got 50 each if we would have kept fishing we stopped cause every fish we were catching was under 20" and I don't care I'd trade 50 24" lakers for 1 fish all season if it was over 20 lbs

I completly agree with you on that. Nothing like jiggin lakers but when theyre fired up and all im getting are small ones I change my tactics and try to target bigger ones in the bunch or force my self to move. Im the same way at onieda with the eyes. Kinda why im excited for the sled this year. I want to get out and find new aread to target fish that arnt getting pounded all the time and the sled will help

I'm not really all that convinced that being able to use smelt is going to be the "Silver Bullet" everyone thinks it is. I mean, really, guys are jigging 20-40 fish in a day, how many more is using smelt gonna get you?
And as for the bigger ones, most guys fishing for bigger lakers are already using ciscoes for bait, so is using smelt gonna make that much of a difference?

I dont think it will make much of a difference on the hot days, but on days when theyre not really aggresive i think it will help, well see.

I'm pretty sure we are gonna have a great hard water season on the LL.  Your gonna see numbers and size this year

I think it will reduce some folks catch rates.  If your lookign for and jigging for smelt your not lake fishing....Ill stick to artificials myself 99% of the time.  The smelt will help if your using tipups for slamon though...

That was gonna be my next point. I think the salmon follow the smelt much more than the lakers do, so I think smelt would be more beneficial to salmon fishermen.
Plus,I've talked to lots of guys who just wanna eat em, not use em for bait. Me being one of them.

I agree I don't think smelt will really help with lakers much salmon yes it will make a huge difference and I too would like some smelt for the pan

They are really good (smelt), just don't try the ones from the supermarket to decide if you like them, totally different.  I think the ones that the store sells (big Y) are the sea run type?  Anyway, I don't really love those, but rainbows are super good.

Are the ones pictured smoked?
