Title: Nothern Challenge - Simond Pond -Who's going
Post by: Dr Juice on Jan 23, 2007, 01:15 PM
I am heading up to showcase my stuff for this tourney. I had a few friends cancel and my friends Ozzy and Bear are heading to the Trap Attack that weekend on silver lake. I have a place to stay and I'm going up on Friday mid day to check out the scene. I want to get a spot and pre drill by Friday night. I've fished tupper before but not Simond or this tourney. I have been brought up to speed on this event and what to expect.
Sounds like a fishing cluster f**k.   ;D
Looking to meet some fellow members to fish with. Anybody up for it? Also if you have any tips for me they are well appreciated.

-Dr Juice

DR
Not sure what You heard !!!! But i can assure you a great time.. weather permitting, The last two years we fished practically in tee shirts. BEAUTIFUL  YES its allot of people, a little crazy, but run very well !!!  Great job club members !!! I think mother nature is going to smack us this year ... But i guess thats why its called the northern challenge... YES go on Friday,,, drill your holes,, mark them with flags, or whatever... Parking is a pain in the ass, I set up Friday ,, leave my quad at the club overnight,,, then Saturday, all i have to do is pick up our tickets, grab my tip ups , get fresh bait on the ice (hopefully) and gitty up !!!

I will be fishing in deep water look for the Irish flag stop by for a beer!!!

My big questions is when or why don't they extend the limits to racette pond and big tupper (if the ice is thick enough) a couple of more weigh stations is all thats needed... just an idea.

Their is a lot of people out there,, it brings in big money to Tupper Lake be safe.

Don't forget to support all the local 50/50 's the money goes to a good cause hopefully mine...

oh yea juice some food is served on the ice also...

I also heard the troopers are going to be enforcing helmets laws, and other safety violations , honestly i think its a good thing!! we don't need any problems giving this great event a bad name

courtesy goes a long way pass it on

When I signed up last year, I spoke with one of the organizers by phone (maybe...?Dave?... can't remember for sure). He told me that the reason it is only on Simons' is to keep it equal for everyone. Some folks might go fishing on Tupper a few days ahead, catch a trophy & present it as if it was from derby day. All in all, it is meant to keep it a good, clean, honest event & keep the cheaters out. Having other bodies of water involved, with their limited numbers of people to staff it, would be too hard to controll.

Thanks for the update hdqtrswp. I didn't know about bait, so I am going to bring some with me to be safe. I will have some venison stew going on the burner, some Jack and some cold ones. I will take your advice and mark my spot a soon as possible. I will be apart of those 50/50 drawings, but I'm looking for a new Quad. ;D
As far as a cash Pike, they don't call me Dr Juice for nothing.  ;)

I'll be on the lookout for the Irish flag. Thanks for the help.

Hello juice, I am headed up Friday morning with friends.  We stay in a local hotel very clean and reasonable price.  Have fished this tourney for 4 years now, second year up there i won a nice Jiffy gas auger.  We  caught some nice fish but no prize fish, althogh it always is a blast.  Hope you have a quad,  cause if you dont find a spot close too the fish weigh in trailer than it can be taugh getting your live fish too the trailer and having it released alive.  Just too let you know this tournament is by far one of the best that i have been in, fish or not we always have a great time out on the ice. Don P.S. will be way down north end of lake. = ;D :) :) ;D

Thanks for the tips BigBear and all you fellow hardwater walkers. I don't have a Quad, so I will be toward the south end of the lake. I plan on bringing one home with me though.  ;D ;D. I will be on channel 7 all day, so we can get in touch that way. Where exactly is the club? Is it by the bridge on 30? I was lookin at going down simond pond rd a ways.

bigbear and I are heading up Fri. Will be doing an early set-up this year due to the large crowds expected. Always fun never a dull moment. The Lodge people are also cracking down on unecessary travel on the ice. Seems that in the early afternoon people get antsy and start zooming all over the ice. This disrupts the fishermen that are still trying to catch the pike. One year there were tons of people racing all around. Even underaged kids were driving daddys toy to give them something to do. Haven't developed patience yet. Many of us voice our concerns for this. Read the fine print on the flyer or entry form of this. Hope to see you there...........

Thanks for the info piscesman. I will keep that in mind. Have a radio on channel 7 and we will talk.

Anyone else going up? Anymore tips from veterans at this tourney?
Still looking for someone to hang out and fish with.

For Dr. Juice-

Hey!
I'm from Halfmoon. I see you are from Albany. I hope to get my bait at my usual spot, Wiggly Worm, on Rt. 50 in Burnt Hills, on the way up. If they don't have what I want, I'll stop at Fish 307 (between Northway exit 20 & 21, on US Route 9, Lake George area). Then, I go up to exit 29 of the Northway & cut over the mountain. Takes me about 2.5 hours to get there (from Clifton Park, without the stop for bait). I am going up early on Friday. I did this tourney last year for the first time. Lots of fun. Got two flags (one was a blank) and brought home a perch. Lost out on a 50/50 drawing for $1300.00 by LITERALLY one number! If I'm up to it, I will be setting up near Pilot's Point (in deep water). If I poop out, I'll be in shallow water near the narrows (just before deep water). Look for a black portable shanty with the brand name "Ice Cube" on it. Just bought a new Carhart hat for fishing. It is BRIGHT yellow. That's me. I sleep out, overnight, on the ice. I hope to be walking out on the ice by 1pm. I almost got run over last year in the dark by a snowmoblier going too fast, so I will be putting some reflectors on the tiedowns of my shanty for safety this year. Look for that. If I can help you with any info, just give me a shout. So, just look for the nut in the bright yellow knit cap, setting up a black shanty that glows in the dark (lol). Judging by last year, it should be a lot of fun. Then there is always the possibility of winning cash & prizes...

See ya there!
Hardwaternubie53!

Sounds good HWN53 from Half moon. I am doing just about the same thing. I should be on the ice by 12-1pm on Friday looking for a spot. I don't where I'm setting up yet, but Ill give you a yell on the radio -channel 7. If you don't have one, then buy one by then.  ;D  I'll get my bait either at the Worm or from Tim at Saratoga tackle. I want to pre drill and stake my spot. I am camping in town at night and will come back down to the post at about 4am. I use a Fish Trap Pro, a Vex fl-18, a yellow Jiffy Stealth with the Shanty handle and I'm wearing a Blue Suit.
Ohh, and I'm coming back home with a Quad or some cash. (LOL) but I'm not kidding.  8)

to hardwaternewbie

Yea i hear that, i have fished every contest,, i think its 6 now.... i hate to admit this but i have not caught 1 fish... my dad neither... My 10 year old has always caught some,, and weighed in also...(all small)  I set up early Friday morning in fishcreek,,catch fish all day.. set up in the pull off  3/30 catch fish all day... alot of fish get caught on simon (over 400) but just not by me...(i hope that changes) I was with 15 other fishermen last year my son was the only one to catch fish... Thats the only reason i think it might be a good idea to expand a little bit. don't get me wrong i could care less if i catch anything,, as long as my number comes in for the quad drawing... and i have a bottle of Mohawk ginger brandy!!!!!!!

hey juice what up with the venison stew
you know you can buy a steak at the store,,why do you want to eat something someone shot or worse hit with a car !!! (just kidding)

later see you all there

I have been fishing this contest with 5 other guys for 7 years.  We have caught some fish but nothing in the money.  Every year we have tried a different spot and always had the same results.  I think you have the same luck in catching a money fish as you do winning a quad.  We have had good luck in staking our claim and getting everything set up on fridays.  We have also purchased bait from the Red Roof Inn.  That is one your right about a 3/4 before you get to the simon pond road.  The owner is a fisherman himself and usually has some good bait.  I would call first just to make sure, it is pretty convienent getting bait from him.  I look forward to this contest they do a great job setting it up.  Good luck  :cookoo:

Hey hdqtrswp, I hear it's tough on the catch sometimes. I have always had good luck with Northerns and
I'm bringing that with me. Tipups are how you bait-em and the presentation. I also like to do some jigging for Pike. It's fun to attract them in and make them strike. We will see how the weather is leading up to that day and Tourney day. I can make my adjustments from there. I will however be bringing the Jack and some small cold Green barrels to keep a good attitude.
About the Stew, it's all about the Hot gravy man. Gotta have it on the Ice.   ;D

Fatman: Thanks for the info on the bait. Hopefully I will need more.  ;)

Dr juice,
i've fished tupper& raquette pond on both hard and soft water.i've only fished simon by boat.iced alot of pike on raquette a couple were 10-12 pounds had a great time.simon seems a little harder although we did get a few in the bays by boat.anyways we usually stay at the red top inn which is right there.he should have all the bait you need,he runs a bait shop from the motel, usally has some good info too.wished i could make the trip this year,my buddy is heading up there today.i'm sure he'll have some stories come monday.good luck
                                                                                                                                         tightlines!!

hdqtrswp: Yes, Shanty members monitor channel 7 on the radios. I have a new group of those Motorola's which go a few miles.

Fishon-2; I tried to get a room at the Red Top, but Jay who runs it said that he has the same people penciled inn every year. He thought he might have 1 room on a cancelation, but then the guy decided to come up. No room at the Inn. ha ha. With all this Artic air upon us, all the lakes are going to be full now.
It is currently 14 below up at Tupper and it is supposed to be that way every night for the next week.
Should be an easy 12- 15 inches of ice by tourney day.
Let us no how your buddy did this weekend.

Plenty of ice and not much for snow.  We don't allow any cars/trucks on the ice.  There are several roads plowed to various sections of the pond.
Good Luck

NYPike.......Smelt are illeagal to use as bait unless you use them in the same pond that you caught them in.  New York made it illeagal recently due to VHS disease.  You can only use bait which is certified VHS free.  DEC stated you can ony use bait in a pond in which you caught the bait.  You can not transfer bait from one pond to another without fear of getting ticketed.  Just thought I would remind you of that in case you didn't know or forgot.  Good luck at the derby.

There's an easy solution to that... Smelt Oil. I got a bottle from Fish 307 (a site sponsor), last year. A few drops goes a long way & gives you the action of smelt, while staying within the regs.

Getting pumped up for this tourney yet HWnubie? I'm ready to go. There's a new spot to get bait and he overloads the pail and not the price. It's at Lake Lonely on the way up the north way. I met the guy last week and he is a friend of my friend. He has coffe out and you can stop back for free soup or chilli in the afternoon. He also lets you put a ticket in a jar for a hand auger drawing. He has all size bait and it's all clean. He said he was bringing in some nice Pike bait for the tourney.
I'll be there early heading up to Tupper. I'll be looking for you.

YUP! I'm STOKED! Can't wait! Not quite ready, still need to get a few last minute things together (food, bait, fuel), but, if all goes well, I should be on the ice by noon tomorrow. Just remembered, got to pack the radio. Did you see the post from ADKMAN that they want to take a group photo of us ice degenerates at 3:30pm at the prize truck?
See ya there. Oh, and thanks for the heads up about the bait store.
