When smaller spoons or jigs don't work, I often rig a large dropper spoon with a 1" pumpkinseed grub on a 1/64 oz. jighead for those types of fish. You jig it aggressively and they wack the spoon half the time, but the other time they wack the grub. 1 1/2" tubes work well too. No time for bait, you don't want them to inspect it but react. You can really ice some jumbos this way.
I once caught a nice yellow perch on the Lower Potomac during a bass tournament on a 1/2 oz. chartreuse buzzbait on my first cast of the morning. Thought for sure I had boated a keeper largemouth for the weigh in until I saw the yellow and bars... wasn't disappointed though, it was fun and I'll never forget it. Funny thing, same log, 3 casts later caught a 4 lb. channel cat on the same log... and not a bass on that log all day!
