Noise on the water
« on: Jan 29, 2006, 05:06 PM »
I was on a lake this weekend and it seemed everyone and there brother had a quad out there running around making tons of noise. Even some of the ice fisherman were just riding around there tip-up. The question I have for all of you is what effect do you think this has on the fishing. My personal opinion is that it SUCKS. Your thoughts?

Mixed bag for me on this one guys.....yesterday the wheelers had the entire darn lake to drive around, so why did they have to drive right through our spread of tipups?  We weren't set up in the middle of a road or anything, I personally like it quiet on the ice after I get set up, the wheelers want to drive around and make noise, fine, just stay around your own tipups and do it.....if the bite is quiet, then maybe a pass or two would shake things up a bit, but too many times I've been getting flag after flag only to have a wheeler or sled come by once or twice and the bite shuts down, especially when the ice is both thin and has no snow cover.....

i think it only scares fish away if Ur shallow but if ur deep i don't think they should get scared b/c there was a guy that had a four wheeler and he set up tip ups and he got a flag he raced over there and he pulled a trout and u would think all the fish would be scared away when he got his tip up but 1 min later he caught another trout.

i have had noise on the ice work both ways for me. i think a lot of constant noise on the ice tends to scare fish however sudden noises on the ice when it is quiet for the most part actually trigger bites. i think it depends a lot on water depth and how much noise their really is on the ice.

well last year my buddies were out on Round lake before, during and after the ice races, and as they were racing, it was making the fish move and inturn they were hitting the baits and sending flags in the air.
So, all the commotion on the ice will scare or make the fish move, but still could trigger a strike.
So, yes it could and could not f-up the bite.  :-\

I personally do 90% of my fishing on the weekends , when it is packed with motorized vehicles. During the week when school is in session there is alot of quiet time. So how do you fortunate guys who fish during the week do compared to weekends?

I never fish weekends. It’s crazy out there. I like a quiet atmosphere with only a few guys around. Fishing is much better and you can have it your way. I find the guys to be friendlier. I stay on the job and work weekends. I let the younger guy have the days off.

I totally hear ya there, I too work weekends or have family obligations and love my weekdays off to fish, very much quieter on the openwater or hardwater.  ;D

On Mariaville Lake the other day we heard quads and sno-mo's, then the Waldron crew started with their racing motorcycles. Two stroke bikes can be loud, maybe even irritating, but you aint heard nuthin' like a fully modified Triumph twin fire flat tracker. These guys race pro and practice on the far side of the lake from the store about 1/2 mile away.
You could actually feel the 'Thumps' of the motor through your feet, cleats, boots, wool socks, and all. My Bud Sean is an old Triumph rider and when we heard the bike start we looked at each other and smiled, a lot. He wanted to go over and watch them run, but trying to introduce his son, Rusty, to ice fishing was paramount and he was satisfied watching through the 'nocs.
Our 'Bite' had started a half hour earlier and continued even after those guys shut down for the day, and I've never felt that anything like that disturbs the fish from certain of their cycles,(no pun intended), especially eating.
Having been a scuba diver at one time, and foolisly adventurous, we'd spent some time under the ice on the Sac, and Lake George, plus a few others, and from being under, listening and feeling, I found that the big old un-muffeled Jiffy drilling the 'Big ten inch' is more noisy than anything else I've ever heard under the ice.
As it breaks through there's a crashing sound and a whoosh of water and ice chips tinkling, and if anything it seems to attract fish as opposed to the other way around. I personally am not bothered as much by vehicles on the ice 'till their drivers start getting careless or stupid. But then, I'm an old motorhead.
You're auger, even a hand cranker, makes more noise under the ice than a quad, and sound transmission through the ice decreases as a function of it's thickness and consistancy, but we really should put this up for a true scientific study...,
...so send your dollars for my new diving gear, recording equipment,(audio and video), quad, motorcycle, new four stroke auger, and a support crew,(the Geezer Pleezer Pro Cheerleading squad will do), and.... 8) ;D ::)

My opinion on this is simple. I won't fish around quads, sleds, or power augers.
Do they scare fish? I honestly don't know.
I do find it very hard to believe that motor noise attracts them, though.

i have a aqua vu and ill drill a hole and put it down and there would always be perch or Sunny's so i would stomp on the ice and the Sunny's didn't scare away. the only fish that get scared are the ones that got caught before.

Interesting enough, we sometimes put a "drive" on for pike. In the shallow water, we've found you can actually push the fish around by walking laps around the far perimeter of your tip-up spread.
And she thinks we're just fishin'

I don't know I just think of the quads and snowmobiles as jet skies for ice. I don't want to see either of them when I'm fishing.

I agree with some of you about an occasional noise triggering a bite. I have drilled a hole or two during the day just to stir things up a bit and have had flags go off as soon as the auger punches through. However I can't help but think that alot of noise will turn fish off.

I feel that a lot movement on the ice hurts when your fishing for suspended fish like certain trout species and landlocks.I fished lake Eaton earlier in the season and had a bunch of guys using quads and those yamaha rhinos to check their tip-ups that they had strung half-way across the lake, and when they weren't checking them they were  blowing donuts and racing back and forth. There was only 4-5'' of ice and no snow on top...we didn't get a single flag.Don't get me wrong,I use a wheeler too,but its to get me and the equipment out to my spot, after I'm set up it stays parked till I'm leaving. The noise did not bother the perch though(40FOW and right on bottum)they hit like champs all day long.

I live in Maine (formerly St. Lawrence County) and between us we usually have 3 or 4 snowmobiles around our shack, and use them to check distant traps quite often.  I've actually been driving by my traps and seen the flag go up right as I passed.  I don't think the noise bothers them.  Besides, there's about 100 other sleds on the ice at any given time on the weekend, which is when I get to fish.  Wish I could attach photos, because I've got a nice picture of some brookies and splake we caught last weekend.

I don't know about trout and walleye, but the perch and pannies definitely go into a more active mode once there is a disturbance above the ice. Where I fish, they do snowmobile drags every Saturday and the fishing is almost always better. Although it does annoy the you know what out of me, it does seem to increase the odds.

The small lake that I spend most of my time on has allways produced better on the week days than on the weekends.  I truly believe that it's because there is a lot less commotion on top.  If you see me out there keep your machines away, I've been known to throw things!!!  :%$#!: :%$#!: :%$#!: :%$#!:

Ya need a "Reason" to cruise around and practice learning what your $5,000. Quad can do? Get a grip, or you'll eventually have to provide a "Reason" to be out Ice Fishing, then a "Reason" to be fishing at all, and when things like this go to court it'll turn out that the overall economy is best served by a $5000. quad as opposed to me and my $1500. dollar ice fishing stuff.
I don't want to start an argumentive debate here but, as I said earlier, get a grip. Fisherfolk in general have had to overcome many obstacles throughout our fishing history, and there are still even MORE groups out there who want to see us gone altogether. Yet we're still catching fish. Get with the times folks, and learn to fish around these other folks who don't know the true joys of fishing. If it was the 'Silence' you need, why do you fish near water falls, dams, and rivers with barges and stuff.
When you express all the problems you have with Quads and sleds in your fishing vicinity,(I don't own any of either. I walk and tug, carry, or pull, by myself), you are providing your 'Legitimate' reasoning for their not being allowed, to the ENEMY who's taking all this "...good information from the fishing Profession itself.", and pounding the halls of the legislature to lobby against it. And you and your sport are gonna be next to need a "Reason" for doing what you want. >:(

Chainsaw, I'll agree with you, but with the following exceptions.  I acknowledge the fact the wheelers and sledders have the right to be on the ice just as much as I do, so long as THEY acknowledge I have as much right as they do.

Case in point....fishing Sunday over on three mile point...what shows up??  An iceboat.  Got himself a 1/4 mile by 1/2 mile wide stretch of ice with no fishermen on it...where does he decide to go?  Down into the 1/4 by 1/4 mile stretch of bay packed with 40 or so fishermen and all their tipups.  WTH??

'Nother case...wheelers got the whole bay to drive on....lots of space between fishermen and their tipups, could easily go around the tipups, lots of room,,,,,do they??  NO, they drive right through the sets...like they have to go directly from point A to point B....would they do this any other time or would they just meander around and log a few miles on the machines?  Note..these are the same morons who have to race to each flag they get, drive right up to it and then wonder why they don't catch any fish.

Up here they're taking away wheelers rights to drive on public roads up in snow country, main reason being they're too irresponsible and are causing too many accidents, mostly from the cases I've heard about, the wheelers are cited with tickets and what not even though they have the right to drive on the roads, but they just don't follow the rules......I'm not saying they're all like that, but quite a few of them are.....

Way I see it is everybody has a right to be on the lake.
But if they choose not to respect me, I sure as **** am not going to give them an inch back.
If there is a benefit to noise around the hole, I would prefer it come from me and not somebody flyin by my rigs. I was on eaton the day Iceenut0 mentioned in this thread, and it is a little depressing to see the same machine drive by you and your rigs over and over and over agian, from 7am - 2pm.
But whatever we do outdoors, spring, summer, fall, and "winter", recreational vehichles will always present a problem to outdoorsman.
It is up to the individual to decide when and how it is appropriate to stand his(or her) ground and tell the sob to take a hike!!!

Tight lines to all,
Wellsy
